About Us
Veterans Inc. is a national leader in ending homelessness among veterans. We have one of the highest rates in the nation – 85% – for transitioning veterans out of homelessness.
Headquartered in Massachusetts, Veterans Inc. is the largest provider of services to veterans and their families in New England. Since 1991, we have helped more than 60,000 veterans and their families. Operations are expanding further into New England and beyond in our goal of eradicating homelessness among veterans.
Veterans Inc.’s clinical case management approach addresses the “total veteran”, incorporating job training and employment, health and wellness, and supportive services ranging from transportation to legal advice. This holistic methodology earned Veterans Inc. a “Best Practice” citation from the U.S. Department of Labor and the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
In 2009, our organization received two national awards for outstanding performance, from Secretary Eric K. Shinseki of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
When it comes to helping veterans, we don’t just put a roof over their heads. We give them the tools to re-build their lives, re-gain their self-respect, and reintegrate with their families and communities. In short, as our clients tell us time and again, we save lives.
Why focus solely on veterans when so many need help? First, because they were there when we needed them, so we must be there now that they need us. Second, because veterans face different challenges than the general population.
Prolonged separation from traditional supports such as family and close friends, highly stressful training and occupational demands, and mental or physical injuries sustained in combat, all can affect veterans’ personalities, self-esteem and ability to function in civilian society. These personal challenges put them at greater risk for substance abuse and PTSD. Furthermore, many veterans entered the service at a young age, before acquiring skills that could be transferred to civilian jobs, putting them at high risk of joblessness and homelessness.
