Who We Are

New Discoveries and Advances Every Day

Every day, there’s a new discovery at the VCU Medical Center.

Whether it’s a patient who undergoes a new, life-saving procedure or a clinical researcher who finds promise in a new cancer treatment, exciting medical advances are taking place.

As the only academic medical center in central Virginia, the VCU Medical Center is on the forefront of health care, providing patients with the most progressive treatments and medical technology available.

Consider that:

  • Our medical staff includes internationally recognized physicians and highly skilled nurses who provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive patient care.
  • Our physicians have been ranked among the top doctors in Richmond in specialties ranging from allergies to vascular surgery.
  • The medical center has been ranked among the top centers nationwide in U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals.”
  • In 2006, the center received Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Clinical highlights include:

  • Multidisciplinary centers for cancer, cardiology, neurosurgery and transplantation
  • Virtually every form of contemporary medical service
  • International recognition for early diagnosis and treatment of chest pain and strokes, organ transplant, head and spinal cord trauma research, burn and wound healing, neonatal intensive care and genetic research, as well as cancer research, treatment and rehabilitation.

Medical History and Patient Satisfaction within an Academic Mission

Making medical history is only part of the reason for the excellent reputation of the VCU Medical Center.

Thanks to the dedication, compassion and expertise of its more than 8,000 staff members - from doctors, nurses and resident medical staff to support personnel and administrators - the center has enjoyed a consistently high patient satisfaction rating.

The medical center’s academic mission supports and is directly linked to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Academic credentials include:

  • VCU is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the nation's top research universities.
  • Located on two campuses in Richmond, VCU enrolls 32,000 students in more than 160 undergraduate, graduate, professional, doctoral and post-graduate certificate degree programs at 11 schools and one college.
