Torrance Police Department

Who We Are

The Torrance Police Department has been proudly serving the community of Torrance for over 100 years, and currently employs 227 sworn police officers and 128 civilian staff.

 

The Department is led by Chief Jay Hart and is supported by his Command Staff, consisting four captains. Each captain is responsible for one of the major components within the Department's structure: the Administrative, Patrol, Special Operations, and Services Bureaus.

The Torrance Police Department mission is to preserve public safety and quality of life within the City of Torrance, to respond effectively to the changing needs of the community, and to promote mutual respect between the Police Department and the people we serve. The Department's primary concern is community safety. The men and women of the Torrance Police Department are wholeheartedly committed to the goal of keeping our neighborhoods free from crime. From the officers on patrol to the officers in our schools teaching children; from the Chief to the newest rookie officer...all maintain a strong spirit of commitment and service to the Torrance community. In return the Department enjoys a very high level of community support, without which we would not be as successful as we are.

The Department always strives to remain at the forefront of policing by providing our officers with the latest in public safety equipment and technology, and by providing our officers with the best law enforcement training available.

Based on the training that our officers have received, several officers from the Department have gone on to become nationally recognized experts and teachers in various specialized law enforcement fields.

The Torrance Police Department features many specialized details that play a critical role in the overall effectiveness of the Department. Specialized Details in the Patrol Bureau consist of a seven person Crime Scene Investigation unit, a Gang Detail, and a Canine Detail. The Special Operations Bureau offers a Crime Impact Team that working undercover, targets major offenders, and a Narcotics Team that targets major international drug distribution organizations. Also located within the Special Operations Bureau is Commercial Enforcement, Parking Enforcement, and the Police Motor Squad. The Department also maintains its own S.W.A.T. unit.

The City of Torrance is located in southwest Los Angeles County in a region known as the South Bay. The fourth largest municipality in Los Angeles County, the City is bordered on the southwest by 1.5 miles of beach, on the west by the City of Redondo Beach, on the north by the communities of Gardena and Lawndale, on the east by the City of Los Angeles' Harbor Gateway, and on the south by the communities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The City of Torrance is located approximately twenty minutes from Los Angeles International Airport by freeway or the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) along the area beaches. Our central location, between Los Angeles and Orange Counties, makes Torrance a prime business center for the region and an important tourist destination offering year-round cultural and recreational activities.

Torrance is a major financial and retail center with outstanding medical care facilities, excellent schools, fine dining and a wide range of hotels. Residents enjoy tennis, golf, swimming, and over 350 acres of open space and parkland which includes the Madrona Marsh, a fresh-water habitat.
