Postdoctoral Research Scientist | Columbia University - Military Veterans

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist focusing on the development of advanced filtration techniques for removing tiny particles from wastewater from washing machines and dryers. In oceans, about 35% of microplastics are derived from laundry activities. Thus, efforts are needed to remove microplastics from these sources. The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will work collaboratively with Lamont-Doherty researchers and other universities in an ongoing NOAA project. Activities include: Conducting performance tests to evaluate the efficiency of the filtration systems in capturing microfibers. Miniaturizing the protype of the filtration system. Incorporating the filter into the power and water systems of dryers and washing machines. Candidates should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Eletrical Engineering or closely related field. Prior work with filtration systems is desirable. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, independent judgement, and demonstrated abilty to conduct and publish high-quality research are required. The initial appointment will be for two years with continuation dependent on funding and research progress. The tentative start date is August 1, 2024, with some flexibility.
