Department FACILITY OPERATIONS-IUB (BL-PHYP-IUBLA) Department Information Capital Planning and Facilities works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. Job Summary Department-Specific Responsibilities Attends to emergency roof leaks/water intrusion reports on roofs of various age, design and composition throughout campus. Performs roof system inspections, cleaning of gutters, sweeping roofs, cleaning and repairing roof drains, patching damaged roofs, emergency repairs, and additional tasks as needed. Operates all roofer-related tools and equipment to include but not limited to: torches, rollers, pressure washers, ladders & lifts, and all associated roofers hand tools. Installs/repairs all roof materials. This includes but is not limited to cant strips, curbing, furring strips, insulation, built-up roofing (torch down), metal roof, mission tile, single-ply roofing including: TPO, EPDM, PVC, etc. Installation of flashing materials, drain basins, tile, and metal roofing. Tears off existing roof material including flashing, asphalt, insulation, aggregate and composition, drain basins, metal and tile, etc. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Drills and punches holes in metal, for screws, bolts, and rivets. Fastens seams and joints together with welds, bolts, cements, rivets, solders, caulks, metal drive clips, and bonds in order to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items. Finishes parts, using hacksaws, and hand, rotary, or squaring shears. Inspects individual parts, assemblies, and installations for conformance to specifications and building codes, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers. Selects gauges and types of sheet metal or non-metallic material, according to product specifications. Shapes metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms, using hand tools. Trims, files, grinds, deburres, buffs, and smooths surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts, using hand tools and portable power tools. Installs door hinges, panic bars, thresholds, motorized projector screens and mounts, and toilet partitions. Maintains kitchen equipment, roof gutters, and overhead doors. Installs and repairs roofing and flashing materials. Installs assemblies, including heating and air conditioning ducts and air handlers; balance air flow. Repairs and cleans air handlers as needed. Repairs air handler coils. Welds metal repairs on mobile or stationary equipment. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties. Drives University vehicles as needed. Works any shift as needed. 24-hour a day emergency response as needed. Assist with snow removal activities as necessary. Qualifications EDUCATION Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) WORK EXPERIENCE Required 5 years verifiable journey level experience in the sheet metal field OR Certificate in DOL apprenticed sheet metal trade LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Required Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire SKILLS Required Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner Proficient communication skills Maintains a high degree of professionalism Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills Demonstrates a high commitment to quality Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment Seeks to acquire knowledge in area of specialty Highly thorough and dependable Demonstrates a high level of accuracy, even under pressure Excellent organizational skills Ability to represent the company with external constituents Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion Strong verbal communication and listening skills Ability to build strong customer relationships Quickly troubleshoots and resolves problems Friendly and service-oriented Proactively approaches responsibilities Knowledge of and ability to use materials, methods/principles and tools specific to the needs of the Sheet Metal Mechanic trade. Knowledge of applicable building codes, regulations or ordinances. Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and/or schematics. Ability to work with wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. May be required to acquire and maintain position-required certifications Working Conditions / Demands This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Works during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus. Additional Information $26.76 per hour $55,660.80 annually Work Location Bloomington, Indiana Work Hours Overtime and standby on an as-needed basis.
