A Mechanical Design Engineer 2, prepares detail designs of GD-OTS products for application to contracted programs, new business activities, and independent research and development activities. Performs work that involves conventional types of designs, investigations, analyses, or equipment. Assignments will generally include one or more of the following: equipment design, analysis, test, or manufacture, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigations, report preparation, and other activities of limited scope requiring knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in the specific area of assignments.


  • Understand basic engineering principles, theories, and concepts. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications for the solution to specific engineering problems.
  • Conducts detail design of GD-OTS product lines for those products that involve piece-parts and/or components.
  • Conducts detail design of test equipment.
  • Makes presentations to customers on contracted programs summarizing product design.
  • Prepares preliminary designs and write-ups for GD-OTS proposals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of properties of aerospace alloys.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of special processes including joining, welding, brazing, and surface finishes.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with manufacturing processes and machine tools involved in manufacture of GD-OTS hardware.
  • Understands and implements standard practices for engineering drawings as required by ASME Y14.100M.


  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline; preferably aerospace or mechanical.
    • Design Engineering required.
  • Master's degree in a technical discipline; preferably aerospace or mechanical.
    • Design Engineering preferred.
Experience Required:
  • 3 to 5 years of experience.
Skills Preferred:
  • MS-Office Proficient, CREO/CAD proficient, analysis (thermal and stress).
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical design.
