HJF is seeking a Musculoskeletal Scientist I to join a vibrant team of musculoskeletal researchers at the DoD-VA Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE). The EACE Regenerative Biosciences Laboratory located within the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University (USU) and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center conducts basic, translational, and clinical studies focused on the development and evaluation of next generation technologies for the treatment of traumatic extremity injuries. The overarching goal of these efforts is to generate the knowledge required to facilitate the translation of small molecules, orthobiologics, biomaterials, and cellular therapies into clinical practice.

The successful candidate will be experienced in the foundations of musculoskeletal biology and will work closely with Dr. Christopher Dearth (https://scholar.usuhs.edu/en/persons/christopher-dearth) and Dr. Stephen Goldman (https://scholar.usuhs.edu/en/persons/stephen-goldman) to establish a portfolio of basic and translational research focused on accelerating the recovery of U.S. Service members that have experienced acute and/or overuse soft tissue (e.g. skeletal muscle, ligaments, tendons) injuries in the course of training and/or combat exercises.

Applicants are expected to have a publication record supporting proficiency in physiological research pertaining to skeletal muscle, ligaments, and/or tendons. The requirements are to be met at time of hire. Applicants must list all of these qualifications (or if pending) on their CV.

Responsibilities

• Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
• Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed laboratory notebook, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional standards.
• Contributes to new grant and funding applications as needed.
• Prepares animal use protocols to be appropriately reviewed by the IACUC at USU.
• Serves as a mentor to trainees, including residents, fellows, students and interns as needed.
• Disseminates the results of research studies through preparation and submission of research manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals for publication and submission of research data for potential presentation at professional meetings.
• Participates in the academic activities of the EACE, including discussing findings at weekly research meetings, attending monthly seminars, and engaging in collaborative research projects as appropriate.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the EACE leadership. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.

• Documented experience using the following techniques:
  • Fluorescence Microscopy
  • Flow Cytometry
  • RT-qPCR
  • Immunoassays
  • Western Blots
  • Cell & Tissue Culture
  • Histological and Immunohistochemical staining
  • Digital Image Analysis
  • Skeletal Muscle Electrophysiology
• Documented experience of working with research animals
  • Aseptic Technique
  • Small/Large Animal Surgery
  • Animal Handling and Injections
  • Anesthetic Recovery

Physical Capabilities

• Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
• Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
• Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Qualifications

Work Environment

• This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience

• Doctorate Degree required ideally in physiology, bioengineering, or an associated field.
• Minimum of 2-5 years experience required. At least 3 years' experience working in the musculoskeletal research needed.
