The Electromagnetic Sciences and Cognitive Space Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opportunity for an applicant in lightning physics research. The successful candidate will work to support our on-going Three-Dimensional Broadband RF Interferometric Mapping and Polarization (BIMAP-3D) studies of lightning physics, based on physics understandings of lightning RF-production mechanism. The candidate should have solid foundation on the relevant physics and mathematics and are desired to be experienced with RF interferometry techniques.
Postdoctoral candidates are required to have a Ph.D. degree, completed within the past five years, or soon to be completed. Appointments are for two years, renewable for a third year.
LANL offers a stimulating environment of diverse, world-class science, in a beautiful mountain setting, where scientists pursue research to solve problems of national significance.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- A background in a relevant branch of physics (e.g., lightning physics, particle or radio astronomy, plasma physics), electrical engineering (RF engineering, advanced data acquisition techniques, interferometric signal processing), or a closely related discipline
- Excellent oral and writing communication skills to support various communication platforms
- Ability and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Willingness to expand into new fields
- Ability to work independently, with creativity and initiative
Education: Postdoctoral candidates are required to have a Ph.D. degree, completed within the past five years, or soon to be completed. Ph.D. must be in physics or related fields.
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with development and deployment of RF systems
- Experience with advanced signal processing, numerical simulation, and statistical analysis skills
- Familiarity with high-energy particle transport in atmosphere
Note to Applicants:
Interested applicants are required to apply online and upload a cover letter and resume. The cover letter must address the candidate experience and how it applies to the opening.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.
