Your Impact:

Jacobs is seeking an engineer or scientist to join our team in support of our Research Laboratory Support (RLS) contract with the U.S. EPA located in Research Triangle Park, NC. The ideal candidate will have professional skills and specialized academic training in a technical field that will be used for, and will lead to, considerable amount of independent, self-managed work. The ideal candidate’s duties will also develop into the management of tasks and possibly projects.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Collaborating with environmental scientists, planners, engineers, and other specialists, to address environmental problems.
  • Operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex air quality instrumentation and sampling equipment.
  • Originating and/or amending written standard operating procedures, quality assurance plans, and work plans as related to air emissions research tasks.
  • Traveling and performing field studies at remote sites within the US to conduct field air sampling studies in different parts of the US (25% travel possible, perhaps as long as 6 weeks per event).
  • Operating environmental test equipment and collecting data, such as gas emissions, flow rates and temperatures.
  • Reviewing data to ensure compliance with project data quality goals and to identify areas for improvement in the quality system.
  • Maintaining hard-copy and electronic records of measurement results and reports in accordance with records management protocols.  
  • Performing all laboratory work in accordance with established safety and quality assurance protocols.

  • This person will be continually learning and developing new skill sets as the research objectives change.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in working with peers and client are required.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a team is required.
Here’s What You’ll Need:

Years of experience: 2-4

Education: B.S. degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as Instrumentation, Environmental Technology, or Environmental Sciences.

Skills required:

  • Air quality measurements, instrumentation or continuous emission monitor operation, electronic (emission or diagnostic) analyzer operation
  • Conducting air quality sampling using a variety of air quality instrumentation including canister “grab” sampling. Troubleshooting air quality sampling systems and developing solutions
  • Communicating effectively the design, fabrication and troubleshooting needs of prototype sensors and samplers amongst vendors, researchers and technicians
  • Communicating effectively the results of research experiments in writing and orally to both internal and external customers
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office
  • Managing field projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in using software packages such as LabView and R, including creating executables files
  • Processing large data sets using software packages such as LabView and R

  • Travel/transportation requirements: Field deployment at remote sites within the US for 2-6 weeks at a time for as many as 2-4 events per year, 25%

  • Tools used in trade - which ones?: Hand tools, Arduino and LabView based software platforms, Excel, R, Matlab data processing software, Microsoft Office products, 100%

  • Shift, 1st, 2nd, 3rd: Core working hours 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m, possible shift work or overtime during field events, 25%
  • Necessity for regular attendance: Regular attendance necessary, 100%
  • Urgency for punctuality: Field deployment requires absolute punctuality for the team, 25%
