The Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing scrub support during surgical procedures. This role is also responsible for handling and maintaining equipment/supplies and works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in all phases of patient care in the operating room

General Summary

Under direct supervision performs delegated patient care functions assisting in surgical procedures and in the preparation of supplies and equipment in an operating room. Fulfillment of job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/ from medication storage and delivery areas.



  1. II.             Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.


  1. Assists in the preparation of the operating room and in the selection of surgical instruments and equipment by reviewing the surgeon preference list and conferring with the circulating nurse to gather appropriate equipment.
    1. Assists with counting needles, sponges and instruments to assure compliance with regulatory standards.
    2. Ensures that all medications on the sterile field are properly labeled.
    3. Ensures that all fluids are maintained at a safe temperature for patient care.


  1. Under the supervision of the surgeon or RN assists with preoperative preparation of patients, such as skin preparation, draping and positioning patients for procedures in accordance with department procedures and protocols, as needed.
  2. Under the supervision of the surgeon or RN assists in a variety of complicated and routine surgical procedures by handing instruments to the surgeon as requested and/or required, preparing suture material for use, and assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team in accordance with departmental protocols.
  3. Performs related duties associated with basic patient care, such as, picking-up blood, delivering specimens to clinical laboratories, performing room turnover between cases, escorting patients when assigned and checking emergency carts for needed supplies by nursing staff.  Transports patients and runs errands as directed by the circulating RN or assigned SCN. 
  4. Assists in the preparation of supplies for sterilization by washing and wrapping instruments, when appropriate.   
  5. Assesses the environmental needs of the area and recommends and/or initiates appropriate action in coordination with professional staff.
  6. Assists with the orientation of new Surgical Technologists by explaining department policies and procedures.


IV.         Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


1.           Demonstrated knowledge of standard precautions and aseptic technique is required.  Knowledge   of basic patient care skills, such as bathing, taking and recording vital signs, and weighing patients             is required.

2.           Ability to learn and apply various patient care techniques, such as, routine nursing practice,    aseptic technique, fire and safety, and infection control.

3.           Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required to work with patients,        visitors, and other healthcare team members successfully to foster optimal quality of patient care. 

4.           Effective listening skills are required in order to follow oral instructions properly. Ability to       follow written instructions is required.

5.           Demonstrated ability to establish and maintains courteous and effective relationships with              patients, visitors, co-workers, and other members of the health care team. 

6.           Demonstrates sensitivity and awareness to the needs of patients, visitors and co-workers.

7.           Ability to attend all mandatory hospital and department in-service training including CPR and              safety training, annually.

V.           Patient Safety


Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.


  1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.


  1. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.


  1. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.


What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience


  1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED is required).  
  2. CPR certification is required. 
  3. Successful completion of an approved Surgical Technologist training program is required
