The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry has an opening for a Researcher 2 in the Herzberg Lab. Performance goals: Demonstrate excellent organizational and outstanding interpersonal skills. Demonstrate an ability to work in a team-oriented environment while also being able to work independently. Demonstrate an ability to do timely, detail-oriented work with excellent results. This position will be resonsible for: Research and data analysis (75%) Conduct biofilm assays, bacterial culture and microcosm development, collection of human whole and parotid saliva and isolation of salivary fractions containing mucins. Follow procedures specified in protocols or as explained by a senior research worker. Select and adapt methods to meet specific research needs and to assist in development of new laboratory techniques. Learn and employ a wide variety of experimental techniques including but not limited to molecular biology techniques including qRT-PCR, cloning, mutant construction, mucin purification, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and confocal microscopy. Maintain a detailed notebook, tabulate and graph data, interpret results for all procedures, and draft relevant sections of research reports and other documents. Read relevant scientific literature as dictated by the investigation and to identify relevant facts, techniques, and procedures from the primary literature. General lab management (25%) Share the responsibility for the smooth running of the laboratory including participating in the ordering of supplies, the operation and maintenance of equipment, data management and analysis, ensuring lab safety, ordering, and assistance in the preparation of data for manuscripts and grants. ' Catalogue and store reagents developed in the lab. Maintain lab database. Note : The funding for this position is assured for only one year at this time. Continuation of this position beyond one year is based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Required qualifications ** you must show all of the required qualifications on your application materials ** Bachelor's degree with focus on Microbiology and one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience to total 5 years. Experience must include experience in molecular biology techniques, such as working with microbial cultures, mutant construction, cloning and gene expression, and detection of expressed proteins by Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy, protein purification techniques. Preferred qualifications: 1-2 years of experience with molecular biology techniques as stated above. Laboratory coursework may be acceptable.
