Your Impact:
Full-time position at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Edwards AFB, CA to perform modeling and simulation research of in-Space electric propulsion technologies and their plume. The successful applicant will research, implement, and validate numerical methods in an existing C++ based framework as well as develop new simulation tools of various EP thrusters. In addition to developing new tools, the successful applicant will perform simulations of EP devices and plume-spacecraft interactions. While experience with specific methods (DSMC, PIC, MHD, or MF) is desired, the diversity of the systems to be studied/analyzed will require strategic use of various methods, a firm grasp of the underlying physics, and flexibility to learn and strategically apply new methods. The successful applicant is expected to publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present research at external conferences, present research at internal meetings, and work closely with in-house experimentalists, engineers, and computational scientists.
The successful applicant will be required to work within an existing scientific framework written in C++ and deployed on Linux and HPC systems. Previous programing experience is required, while distributed version control, continuous integration systems, and/or experimental based validation campaigns is highly desired.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with developing and/or implementing numerical methods in an existing or new code.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute to a team effectively in a research environment.
  • Must be a US Citizen and able to pass a background check/security clearance and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in one or more relevant area including, plasma physics, in-space electric propulsion, finite-rate chemistry modeling, DSMC, PIC, MHD, Multi-fluid, Vlasov, commercial CFD packages, and/or uncertainty quantification.
  • PhD or Master’s degree with history of independent research in a relevant field.
  • Computer science experience with object-oriented language (e.g. C++ or Python), version control, and continuous integration.
  • Knowledge of parallel programming models (MPI, OpenMP, and CUDA) and their use on high performance computing systems.
  • Publication of research results in conferences proceedings or peer reviewed journals.
