Purpose and Essential Duties

The Estimator is responsible for reviewing drawings for pipe, valves, and fittings takeoff using estimating software tools as well as quantifying and summarizing scheduled and miscellaneous equipment items. Also reading specifications to identify piping material types, specific job requirements, and deviations from Bernhard standard practices. The estimator will take all of the information from PVF takeoff and equipment summaries then compile into an estimate summary.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing and evaluating requests for proposals.
  • Reviewing construction documents and understanding scope of work to bid.
  • Executing take-offs of construction documents.
  • Reviewing material takeoff for completeness and accuracy.
  • Entering take-offs into database.
  • Obtaining pricing for specialty materials.
  • Soliciting bids from subcontractors and vendors.
  • Compiling take-offs and equipment summaries into project estimate.
  • Scope reviews of subcontractor and vendor quotes.
  • Informing immediate supervisor of any observed inaccuracies or omissions in quoted item or database.
  • Drafting and finalizing proposals, bid forms, and cost breakouts.
  • Developing and maintaining resource information on products, vendors, subcontractors, government requirements, etc.
  • Attending departmental meetings.
  • Training and coaching of Takeoff Estimator I & II.
  • Bid calendar coordination for takeoff purposes.
  • Review bid documents and specifications for project-specific requirements.
This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and reports to the Director of Estimating.

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications
  • 3-10 years of related experience, preferably ductwork experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Experience with estimating techniques and cost control.
  • Ability to perform detailed labor and material take-offs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Bluebeam.
  • Understanding of MCAA labor book.
  • Critical thinking and technical writing skills to draft proposals.
  • Understanding of a variety of mechanical and plumbing systems and equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and willing to tackle various ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Versed in the industry and the Company's competitors.
  • Ability to multitask and perform duties outside of the scope of work when necessary.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Estimation Viewpoint and/or Trimble Autobid software.
Travel Requirements
  • 10-15% of time will be spent traveling to job site/office location.
Physical/Work Environment Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
