Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical duties within Duke Molecular Physiology Institute working in Dr. Deborah Muoio laboratory. This position will be involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests, experiments, and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the equipment as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.

Work Performed

  • Under the direction of the PI, provide support in metabolic research involving rodent and cell culture models of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease
  • Perform laboratory duties involving molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture
  • Assist PI and postdoctoral fellows with assays involving mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics
  • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation including database maintenance and use of electronic notebooks
  • Order and stock lab supplies
  • Maintain laboratory equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as requested

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience with basic biochemistry and cell biology techniques such as DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, qRT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, western blot analyses, enzymology, respirometry and/or cell culture is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with mass spectrometry is highly desirable
  • Basic computing skills and experience with Excel software
  • Experience with data visualization software (e.g. Prism) and/or statistics (JMP) is desirable
  • Competencies in data analysis, data visualization and/or coding skills are highly desirable
  • Ability to enforce and adhere to strict safety requirements
  • Must have strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and adaptable to shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to efficiently multi-task and work effectively in an interactive team environment

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Work generally requires skills acquired through the completion of a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology, or other science related scientific field program.

 

Experience:

Work requires two years of research experience. A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g., a two-year master's degree in lieu of two years of experience.
