Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting laboratory tests, experiments and determinations in support of Duke University research operations.
Work Performed
Manage lab projects
Perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical or biological tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data in support of research-oriented activities; compile and document procedures and results. Handle and use mice as an experimental model of human disease.
Establish work procedures
Determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests. Establish appropriate calibration and/or repair of equipment if required.
· Prepare culture media, chemicals, solution s and reagents.
· Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments.
· Re view laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
· Carry out experimental protocols
· Use computer-based data management and computer-based analysis programs. Employee will analyze data, present graphs and analyses and prepare written reports.
· Using computer-based buy at Duke and other systems, initiate and carry out- ordering supplies, arrange data uploading to protected files, etc that are typical for a research-based laboratory
· Supervise the work of lower level employees and students engaged in data collection and assist in tabulation and proper storage of data, establish work procedures including assisting with writing of appropriate protocols, results of experiments, data analyses
· Direct supervision and training of undergraduate students in the proper u se of equipment, proper handling and use of experimental mice, oversee safety
Carry out Animal based care and experiments Handling, breeding and maintaining mice in an established colony containing multiple genetic strains of mice- this includes skills in animal husbandry; animal identification and tracking, animal gender identification; and using various techniques to genotype mice
· Harvesting tissue from mice
· Injection of mice
Behavior studies on mice
· Approved Euthanasia of mice
· Perfusion of mouse brain
· Storage of mouse tissue and maintenance of data records for each mouse
· Prepare tissue specimens from mouse brain or other tissues for use in microscopy, or other critical techniques
Molecular biology/biochemical analytic skills
standard lab techniques such as but not inclusive to • Quantitative (real time) PCR, gene arrays • Immunoblotting (western) including LICOR techniques • ELISA
• Protein assays
· Oversee other technical support, including students and other lower level employees
· Interact with vendors to purchase supplies, equipment etc.
· Place and receive orders for lab purchases
· Maintain standards for cleanliness and order in the lab
· Other duties as assigned
