T he Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division as Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a postdoctoral appointee. Under the guidance of a supervisor, conduct fundamental and use-inspired research on multi-step reaction chemistry and catalysis in protein-based shells of Bacterial Microcompartments (BMCs). This research is part of the Center for Catalysis in Biomimetic Confinement, CCBC, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the DOE. Research is multifaceted, including protein bioinorganic and biochemistry techniques that augment BMC shell proteins with abiotic cofactors and the characterization of structure-function relationships in self-assembled hybrid BMCs using a range of spectroscopic techniques.

Develops bioinorganic methods for protein modification enabling the insertion of abiotic cofactors into BMC frameworks. Characterizes the structure, electron transfer properties, photophysical and photocatalytic function of BMC hybrid assemblies with opportunities to use a range of biophysical spectroscopic techniques including transient optical spectroscopy, X-ray scattering approaches, and EPR spectroscopies and to interact with CCBC research team members across Argonne, Michigan State University, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Analyzes data, prepares manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, and makes presentations at scientific meetings. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of pertinent literature. Develops new ideas, concepts, and/or research proposals.

Position Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of and experimental expertise in one or more of the following areas: Protein isolation, protein modification, protein function characterization, protein cofactor characterization, transient optical spectroscopy, x-ray scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy.


  • Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Good skill in data processing, evaluation, and interpretation. Good skill in working in an interdisciplinary research team setting.
  • Some knowledge of and experimental expertise in one of more of the following techniques is a plus: protein design and expression using recombinant DNA and microbial protein expression techniques, , biophysics, EPR spectroscopy, absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry.
  • This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in bioinorganic chemistry, biochemistry, or physical chemistry or related disciplines at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
