Job Description

We are looking for a Research Assistant to perform laboratory experiments and activities to support probiotic and human nutrition science research. A successful candidate will be responsible for execution of routine experiments as it relates to probiotic stability and physiology of traditional lactic acid bacteria, as well laboratory upkeep and equipment maintenance. They will need to be able to communicate and collaborate with researchers working within the areas of microbial genomics, microbiome science, applied microbiology and clinical nutrition. A critical aspect of this position involves working within a team environment and will require effective time management and communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate as part of an R&D team through engagement in the research process through analysis and interpretation of experimental data.
  • Assist within applied research and product development with probiotic bacteria with an emphasis on culture stability in a wide range of food and dietary supplements.
  • Microbiological enumerations of probiotic bacteria.
  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory work.
  • Preparation of laboratory solutions including growth media and agar. Ensuring the stocks are maintained for these solutions as well as other laboratory supplies
  • Be compliant with laboratory safety protocols – proper protective equipment, safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain clean work environment.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position, along with compliance with all Company and Department policies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Two-year degree in microbiology, food science, food technology, biochemistry or directly related field, with experience in a laboratory environment as a plus.  
  • The incumbent will function as a microbiologist by performing bacterial enumerations and other technical analyses for the identification and characterization of probiotic cultures.
  • Fundamental knowledge of bacterial physiology, bacterial genetics, spore forming microbes is ideal.
  • Flexibility in learning new methods and applying to projects under the direction of the team leader.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills with in the team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and carry-out scientific experiments.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot lab equipment.
  • Ability to carry-out department objectives.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work at the lab bench for extended periods.

Working Conditions

The Research Assistant will support the Probiotic Development team at the IFF Madison Innovation Center. Work will be carried out in laboratories, expected 35-40 hours per week, M-F, regular shift.
