What You Will Do

We are looking for candidates to join our team in Los Alamos National Laboratory's Theoretical Division (T-Division). T-Division provides a unique and engaging environment that fosters multi-disciplinary collaborations to support the laboratory's strategic basic research and national security missions. The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics (T-5) group within T-Division conducts research across a wide variety of topics including fusion science, space plasma, numerical analysis, computational imaging, optimization, and the modeling of critical infrastructure (gas pipelines and electrical grids). These application areas are tied together by research in novel algorithms, numerical methods, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The Applied Mathematics and Plasma Physics group (T-5) is seeking a qualifiedcandidate to hire as a Postdoctoral candidate jointly on its Applied Math and Numerical Methods Research Team and the Advanced Network Science Initiative Team. The postdoc candidate will conduct research on two topics utilizing state-of-the-art machine learning methods (both reinforcement and imitation learning):

1) Automatically learning to decompose complex 3D geometric shapes (represented as CAD models) into blocks that can be meshed with hexahedral elements for numerical simulation.

2) Accelerating global solutions to non-convex optimization problems, and its application to design and operation of power infrastructure networks. In particular, to efficiently learn the repeated decisions involved in iterative routines of global optimization schemes where the methods are based on expert strategies for complex decisions, and replace manually tuned heuristics.

The candidate is expected to work in an interdisciplinary environment with substantial collaborative research. The successful candidate is expected to publish in peer reviewed journals, present their research at conferences and workshops, and contribute to software repositories.
