What You Will Do

The Nuclear Material Control and Accountability group is seeking an exceptional leader to manage the NMCA Site Operations Team. This team is responsible for supporting all operations that use accountable nuclear material at Los Alamos National Laboratory outside of TA-55 to include Physical Inventories, transactions in the LANL nuclear material accountability system, response to anomalous conditions, leading continuous improvement efforts, and mentoring/training others on MC&A topics.

This position is a highly visible with broad institutional impact and requires a balance of strong leadership, technical competence/ability, and commitment to continuous improvement. The selected candidate must be comfortable engaging with management throughout Los Alamos National Laboratory and DOE/NNSA, be able to anticipate challenges or obstacles and tactfully resolve them with minimal supervision.

MC&A Site Operations Manager 3 (Material Control & Accountability Manager)

$105,700 - $176,400

As the manager of the Site Operations team, you will be an essential part of the NMCA leadership team. You will be able to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to assure MC&A requirements are implemented. You will be responsible for ensuring accounting, physical inventory, termination of safeguards, and MC&A coordination activities are supported and implemented. You will ensure accurate and timely reporting to internal and external stakeholders, following anomalous condition and abnormal event notification processes, manage assigned corrective actions to closure, identify and/or support continuous improvement efforts, and perform day-to-day management activities.

Demonstrated experience with the development and application of metrics and lessons learned to improve performance, ability to manage procedure development and implementation, and experience responding to anomalous conditions, managing corrective action plans, and reducing risks through modification of work practices and processes to achieve efficiencies while maintaining compliance with requirements


Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to advocate and negotiate for a position.

Management Skills

Demonstrated skill in management, supervision, hiring, and developing assigned employees

Technical Competency

Demonstrated professional-level experience in one or more of the following areas: nuclear instruments and methods, nuclear material safeguards, security management, or experimental nuclear science and engineering.

Demonstrated ability to interpret Federal requirements, to embed requirements into procedures and work practices, and to develop compliance-based solutions to a broad range of complex issues.


Position typically requires a bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:

Technical Proficiency

Thorough knowledge and experience with Nuclear Material Controls and Accountability processes, procedures, and requirements. Thorough knowledge and experience with DOE O 474.2, Nuclear Material Control and Accountability.

Experience in the use of statistical analysis and controls in a nuclear material control, manufacturing, or processing environment.

While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
