The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. This position will be in support of the Undersea Medicine Department at the Naval Medical Research center in Silver Spring, MD.

UMD conducts biomedical and clinical research to increase the safety, readiness, and performance of deployed Naval forces engaged in undersea occupations such as diving, special operations, and submarine duty. The department provides a mission-essential capability for translational research using animal models of both hyperbaric and hypobaric exposures. The department develops cutting-edge technologies to prevent and treat decompression sickness as well as pulmonary and central nervous system toxicity associated with hyperbaric oxygen. Additional unique research efforts include testing plans for disabled submarine rescue and identifying countermeasures to improve warfighter performance at high altitude.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking a Research Associate I to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Performs limited analysis and interpretation of results.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, conducts, and completes investigations independently and/or collaboratively under the supervision of the UMD department head, deputy department head, and senior civilian scientist. Assignments require the performance of complex laboratory tests, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches.
  • Assists with the preparation and submission of research proposals and reports for sponsors and within NMRC.
  • Performs data analysis and interpretation. Verifies and corrects data entry.
  • Preparation and presentation of research at professional meetings.
  • Preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication in technical or peer-reviewed journals.
  • Provides guidance and training to lower-level laboratory staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the UMD department head and deputy department head, or senior civilian scientists.
  • Maintains records and documentation regarding assigned research.
  • Documents current or new procedures or protocols for sample selection, data collection, data processing, and/or statistical estimation.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze and interpret data.
  • Must be able to work with large animal models in a surgical atmosphere.
  • Prior experience with animal models required.
  • Leadership skills and able to work with a team.
  • Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.

Physical Capabilities
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Operating motor vehicles, machinery, and/or power tools.

Qualifications

Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years' experience required.
