What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, Operations Support Specialist to join the Hazardous Materials Management Group (NPI-7). NPI-7 ensures safe, efficient and compliant management of all radioactive and hazardous material generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). The group also manages nuclear material shipments and provides other support to these facilities, including safeguards support. NPI-7 ensures that all activities in these facilities are conducted in compliance with applicable environmental regulations and Laboratory policies. Operational Support Specialist 2 ($65,700-$104,400)

The Operations Support Specialist 2 will assist in the operations functions of facilities or organizations, programs, business activities, and other areas that require functional support for meeting deliverables. This position assists process-based activities such as shipping and receiving, laboratory sample-processing, operations processes of facilities or organizations, and other roles needed to support operations.

Operational Support Specialist 3 ($79,200-$129,000)

In addition to the above, the Operations Support Specialist 3 provides high-level oversight and support for operations functions programs, and other areas that require operational oversight for meeting deliverables. This position provides oversight and support for process-based activities such as shipping and receiving, laboratory sample-processing, operations, and other activities associated with operational deliverables.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated application of one or more of the following: state, federal, DOE, and LANL environmental and waste management regulations and requirements, waste administrative requirements, waste acceptance criteria, and waste certification requirements.
  • Ability to ensure that processes are followed through with efficiency, accuracy, and with high quality, while understanding and maintaining priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team while interacting successfully with all levels of staff and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with customers in a customer service-related setting.


Additional Job Requirements at the higher level:
  • Advanced knowledge of nuclear facility operations (or comparably complex facility), including integrated safety management, regulatory compliance, performance assurance, and conduct of operations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an emphasis towards procedure development and customer service.
  • Abiility to develop detailed plans to manage processes, scope, quality, efficiency, risk to deliverables, communications, and professional responsibility.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficiency with the Laboratory's Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS)
  • Radworker, HAZWOPER and RCRA certification
  • Familiarity with waste operations in a Nuclear Facility
  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance and HRP certification.

Education and Experience at the lower level:

Position requires a Associate's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education and Experience at the higher level:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
