What You Will Do

Sigma Division is seeking an exceptional candidate to serve as the Group Leader for the Sigma-2, Finishing Manufacturing Science Group. This high-performing group is comprised of four teams including Machining & Inspection, Characterization & Special Projects, Electrochemistry & Corrosion, and Welding & Joining.

Sigma-2 provides science-informed methodologies to solve unique materials processing and manufacturing challenges, near net shape fabrication for material systems comprised of elements spanning hydrogen to uranium, high precision conventional and electrochemical finishing operations, and post manufacturing capabilities for characterization and component testing. The selected Group Leader will be responsible for ensuring the success of the teams in project execution, staff development, promoting safety and security across the group and will have a strong focus on other daily business functions, including budget management, HR, etc.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated technical leadership and excellence, including development of new capabilities, oversight of technical projects, strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated record of technical accomplishments and professional experience in materials science and manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of effective leadership, including recruiting, mentoring, motivating employees, effectively resolving conflicts, development of employees, and retention.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills, which includes communication with staff, administrators, and an ability to interact with all levels of Laboratory management.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent budget preparation and oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting successful cross-organizational collaborations to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Ph.D. in materials science, physics, materials chemistry is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in both R&D and manufacturing environments.
  • Active "Q" clearance.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the Division's capability areas.
  • Experience in designing, analyzing, coordinating and/or conducting experimental activities.
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative partnerships across LANL internal organizations and demonstrated success in developing and sustaining programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Programs, Global Security Programs, NNSA, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.
  • Experience in interactions between national laboratories, universities, or private industry.
  • Familiarity with LANL administrative, safety and security policies.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
