What You Will Do


The Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation (NEN) Division are experts in the LANL Global Security mission in:

Detecting and preventing the development or use of nuclear weapons and improvised nuclear devices.

Reducing and limiting nuclear arms and the spread of nuclear and radioactive materials, technology, and expertise.

Providing the capability and conducting critical, subcritical, and fundamental physics measurements to develop and maintain the Nation's Nuclear Safety and Security Expertise.

Conducting research and development that supports the nation's energy security.

NEN-3, International Threat Reduction applies expertise in nuclear and radiological material and commodities detection, packaging, capacity-building, modeling and simulation to reduce nuclear proliferation and enhance global security in a changing threat environment.

Work in NEN-3 includes the research, development, and implementation of novel technology and solutions to identify, monitor, track and recover nuclear and radiological materials related to the Global Security mission. These efforts include the development and management of creative and innovative software solutions with a focus on systems that model nuclear/radiological facility process flows; simulate nuclear/radiological worker actions and operations; track nuclear/radiological material storage, movement, and use; enhance treaty verification capabilities; and other applications directly related to nuclear security and safeguards. In addition as a contributing member of a team, help refine team objectives and work with other team members in scheduling commitments and resources.

The successful candidate will become a member of NEN-3, and be assigned to the Nonproliferation Application and Project Development team (NAPD). This team develops creative and innovative hardware and software solutions in support of Global Security missions with a focus on software engineering, data management, and emerging technologies.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 1 ($87,200-$142,500)
  • Assists in the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of software engineering and software development solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Assists in the development of new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems.
  • Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects. May directly contribute to the achievement of programmatic objectives.
  • Takes responsibility for understanding tasks and owns contributions to deliverables. Sets direction and goals for assigned tasks and manages his/her own assignments.
  • Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge within the discipline, and develops new skills in related disciplines. May be asked to attain additional certifications and/or qualifications, including more advanced educational degrees.

R&D Engineer 2 ($96,100-159,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level additional duties would include:
  • Contributes to the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of software engineering and software development solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Develops a technical approach and new methods or techniques, using creativity in applying standard software engineering practices and procedures, which lead to new or improved capabilities.
  • Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person.
  • Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost.
  • Mentors early career staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience related to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications, systems, and solutions including full stack development.
  • Knowledge/understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and appropriate standards.
  • Experience with modern software development methodologies such as Agile and DevOps and appropriate tools and processes.
  • Knowledge/experience with programming languages such as C#, Java, Python and/or Javascript.
  • Knowledge/experience with database design, security strategies and component integration.
  • Knowledge/understanding of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.
  • Knowledge/understanding of hardware and software integration and testing.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience related to the design, development, and maintenance of software applications, systems, and solutions including full stack development.
  • In-depth knowledge of software engineering principles, design patterns, and appropriate standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, plan, and execute software development projects.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with modern software development methodologies such as Agile and DevOps and appropriate tools and processes.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with programming languages such as C#, Java, Python and/or Javascript.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in database design, security strategies and component integration.
  • In-depth knowledge/understanding of hardware and software integration and testing.
  • Demonstrated history of work with multi-disciplinary teams, fostering a teaming environment, and providing effective leadership and mentorship for team members
  • Demonstrated history in driving process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability for self-directed work, planning, and prioritization.

Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience In:
  • Developing software applications related to nuclear facility operations, material tracking, and/or inventories.
  • Developing applications for detector integration and interfaces.
  • Software Quality Assurance for safety related software application development.
  • Nuclear facilities and materials related operations.
  • Requirements gathering and documentation for nuclear engineering related projects.
  • Agile frameworks, tools and techniques.
  • Scrum Master Certification.
  • Active Q Clearance.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
