The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. This position will be in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory, 711 Human Performance Wing, Airman Systems Directorate, Airman Biosciences Division, Biotechnology Branch.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking a Research Scientist I or II to develop and supervise research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

The overarching aim of this research is to prevent adverse effects due to operationally relevant stressors and improve the overall health status of Airmen. Military operations often involve travel, sub-par sleeping conditions, and fluctuations in sleeping arrangements that can cause disruption to internal circadian clock rhythms.

Responsibilities
  • Identify small molecules and biological pathways relating to stress response that affect, or are affected by the circadian clock machinery in tissues pertaining to human performance.
  • Optimize circadian transcriptional output to sustain human performance against Air Force relevant extreme stress environments (arctic, long term darkness, hypoxic conditions and exposure to contaminants).
  • Develop in vitro models to study Circadian Clock in Cells using systems biology approaches based on using CRISP/Cas9, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data.
  • Work simultaneously on multiple projects, involving a diverse and interdisciplinary team of scientists across multiple laboratories.
  • Prepares research proposals, progress reports, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive and proven computational skills a must.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Qualifications

Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in an office and laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
  • Doctoral Degree in molecular biology, systems biology, toxicology or a closely related field required.
  • Level I: Minumum of 2-5 years experience required.
  • Level II: Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.
