Northrop Grumman, Space Systems, Propulsion Systems is currently seeking a Director of Engineering for Systems and Project Engineering (PSE) to lead our Systems and Project Engineering teams in our Promontory, Clearfield, and Magna, Utah offices.

Description:
This position is a senior engineering leadership role in the Northrop Grumman, Space Sector, Propulsion Systems (PS) business unit. As a leader in PS, the Director stewards both the systems and project engineering organizations, supporting all Programs, for development and production.

As Director of the Systems Engineering Homeroom the Director leads initiatives and activities (command media, standard work, checklists, peer reviews) to develop the Systems Engineering discipline, activities and initiatives to develop Systems Engineers, and outreach and coordination with Launch Vehicles and SDS systems engineering leadership to enable appropriate focus and optimization of tool and process development.

Additionally, as Director of the Project Engineering Homeroom, the Director leads initiatives and activities (command media, standard work, checklists, peer reviews) to develop the Project Engineering discipline, activities and initiatives to develop Project Engineers, and outreach and coordination with Chief Engineering and Process Engineering leadership.

The Director will also develop and implement a "responsible engineers" construct (the combination of Project Engineer and Design Engineer needed for efficiency).

Finally, the Director will serve as the integration focus lead on the Integrated Engineering Council, representing a constituency of more than 950 engineers, and will provide a necessary link for process handoff coordination and culture/tool integration across all engineering functions at PS. Propulsion Systems deploys systems engineering as an OEM rather than a prime. This places the engineer much closer to the product and requires skills and experience dealing with the product design maturation process rather than a focus on systems architecting.

Responsibilities:
The PSE Engineering Director is responsible for setting the standards and expectations of the engineers that function in systems, and project engineering and the recruiting and retention and development of engineers who will be deployed to various programs in these roles.
  • The director will lead the systems engineering and project engineering within PS. providing direction and vision for these engineering function.
  • The director is the lead for the PSE homeroom. The homeroom is responsible for establishing the standards, expectations and training of Systems and Project engineers.
  • The director will need to understand the overall vision and direction of Propulsion Systems and how the PSE homeroom enables that vision.
  • The director will need to have strong team-building/collaboration skills and be able to reach across Propulsion Systems to resolve cross organizational issues and provide concise communication to customers and senior leadership.
  • The director sets role and performance expectations, provides feedback, coaching, training and growth opportunities for direct reports
  • The director also coordinates across NG with other sectors on the overall NG model based systems engineering focus, strategy and deployment.
Basic Qualifications:
• BS in Mechanical, Systems or Aerospace Engineering.
• At least 15 years of professional experience in the defense or aerospace industries.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving results through understanding and management of internal processes and customer/supplier relationships.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to focus on multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated experience in making sound decision in uncertain and difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated strength in creating action-oriented teams that execute to a cohesive vision.
  • The ability to forge working relationships outside of the directorate (internal and external) that enable the accomplishment of the vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and set the vision for the PSE organization.
  • Demonstrated experience working with customers and executives.
  • U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Position may require domestic travel,
Preferred Qualifications:
• A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the solid rocket motor propulsion industry.
• A graduate certificate in Systems or Project Engineering is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of SE and PE processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks
  • A working knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering as applied to aerospace OEM environments.
  • A working knowledge of solid rocket motor manufacturing.
Salary Range: $155,600 USD - $233,400 USD

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
