This role is for a Systems Engineer, with an interest in cyber and security design engineering, to work within the Systems Engineering Team in Boeing Defence UK (BDUK).

BDUK is a subsidiary of the Boeing Company and currently employs over 1,400 people in the UK. We are responsible for delivering several exciting contracts to our UK defence customers including new capabilities like the E-7 AEW&C and the P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Autonomous Systems, C4ISR Services, Support for the Chinook & Apache Fleets, Logistic Information Services and Training Services and are very much in a growth phase.

In-line with the structure and operating model of the Engineering function, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of programmes, business development opportunities as well as contributing to Engineering excellence across the company. This role will initially be assigned to a Land Systems Programme.

Our programmes run internationally, with key partners being Boeing Defence, Space and Security, based in the USA, and Boeing Defence Australia. You will be part of our ongoing collaboration with these business units, and this provides opportunities for travel for short- or longer-term periods. Candidates may have the opportunity to temporarily relocate to Australia for periods of up to six months if required.


The successful candidate will be a key part of the team working on technical security, including developing the Security Architecture and ensuring compliant and accreditable security enforcing functions and controls are delivered into the programme.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Requirements capture of the security enforcing subsystems and components in accordance with the customer requirements;
  • Design and definition of the Security enforcing functions, controls and security enforcing features of the overall solution, and associated subsystems;
  • Evaluation, review and testing of security enforcing controls and systems. Including scoping and assisting system threat assessments;
  • Liaising with suppliers via supply-chain management to identify the best-fit components for the solution using trade-studies where applicable;
  • Supporting any in-house software development and integration required for the Systems Integration and Security technical solution elements during incremental delivery spirals;
  • Providing technical oversight to suppliers of solution components;
  • Managing interfaces with other elements of the system;
  • Documenting the security design in the Solution Architecture Design document and other key documents encompassing the technical baseline;
  • Ensures the security solution is documented for input to end-user training and technical publications;
  • Liaising closely with Internal and Customer Security Advisors to ensure the solution meets the applicable System security and accreditation requirements and standards;
  • Attending Customer and internal Security Working Groups to progress the security subsystem specification, implementation, testing and acceptance;
  • Technical planning and progress tracking;
  • Support the development and maintenance of BDUK SSE strategy and processes which will also require liaising with International HF colleagues (mainly US and Australia); and
  • Tailoring and application of engineering initiatives, best practices and processes.

Aside from your technical work you there is the potential to support company initiatives, for example, quality improvements, promoting a safety culture, promoting Diversity and Inclusion, mentoring and coaching, STEM outreach and a number of focus projects to support the growth of the company including its employees.

Preferred skills and experience:

Experience in some or all of the following is required:

  • System Design including: Architectural design, Functional analysis, Interface Management, Maintaining Design Integrity, Modelling and Simulation, Solution Trade-Offs, Integration & Test, Verification, Validation and Transition to Operation
  • The application of the fundamental concepts of systems thinking to systems engineering. These include: understanding what a system is; its context within its environment; its boundaries and interfaces; its lifecycle and an appreciation of the role the system plays in the super system of which it is a part. 
  • The delivery of Information Security focused tasks or projects
  • The application of security principles to common Engineering, Development & Integration methodologies (Security application within the V model, Incorporating Security Best Practices within Agile, DevSecOps)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, IBM DOORS, MBSE Tools (EA or CAMEO).
  • Experience of working within the UK Government Sector, or awareness of security & engineering principles from HM Government.

In addition:

  • An aptitude and willingness to learn about & develop Security & Systems Engineering expertise is also essential backed up with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in the use of main Microsoft office packages.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in response to changes in programme plans and priorities.

Desirable:

  • Experience of Customer and wider stakeholder management;
  • Experience in some of the following areas: C4ISTAR, Air Platforms, Mission Systems, Communications Systems and Networks, Training Systems and Training Related Technology.

Qualifications:

A Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in Systems Engineering or a related engineering field is required with minimum of 5 years’ experience in the development of complex systems and Systems of Systems is required. In particular, systems engineering experience relating to Mission Systems, Information Security, secure communications systems, vulnerability assessments, and security enforcing subsystems is desirable.

Professional Qualifications such as BCS Foundation Certificate in IS/CompTIA Security +/SSCP, whilst not essential, would demonstrate familiarity with the domain area.

Industry Recognized Information Security Qualification such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or other relevant Information Security qualifications are highly desirable, but not essential.

Location:

The primary location for our Engineering team is Bristol, with the general expectation of 2 – 3 days a week in the office to foster collaboration and team efficiency with the remainder from home if desired. Some UK and International travel is expected.

Work Authorisation: This requisition is for a locally hired position in the UK. Candidates must have current legal authorisation to work immediately in the United Kingdom. Boeing will not attempt to obtain Immigration and labour sponsorship for any applicants. Benefits and pay are determined at the local level and are not part of Boeing U.S. based payroll.

Security Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain a UK security clearance for which the Government requires UK Citizenship. A high level of security clearance will be required for this role due to the nature of the area of the business this supports.

Relocation: This position does not offer relocation. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense
