HJF is seeking a Histology Technician I to support the DoD-VA Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) Regenerative Biosciences Laboratory within the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) & Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) located in Bethesda, Maryland. The EACE Regenerative Biosciences Laboratory conducts basic, translational, and clinical studies (i.e., bench to bedside) focused on the development and evaluation of next generation technologies and approaches for the treatment of traumatic extremity injuries. The overarching goal of these efforts is to generate the knowledge required to facilitate the translation of promising technologies into clinical practice.

The incumbent performs research in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment. Utilizes molecular biology, cell biology and animal models of orthopaedic trauma.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking a Histology Technician I to be responsible for producing histologic preparations to be used for diagnostic purposes in support of clinical research. This is the first of two-level series of Histology Technicians and is distinguished by developing proficiency conducting tasks and assignments as directed. Contributes to team objectives and outcomes as guided with moderate supervision that allows some latitude for independent judgment. Limited problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepares routine diagnostic histologic preparations using standard procedures in accordance with guidelines established in a clinical research protocol. Logs specimens and performs a variety of routing histological procedures including serologic, immunohistochemical and immunoelectophoresis.
  • Sorts and identifies specimens; cuts, stains and mounts specimens on slides; labels finished slides. Makes decisions regarding adjustment of staining procedures for certain tissues and special requested stain
  • Prepares solutions and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Assists in gathering and recording data for research protocols.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Competency in microtomy, embedding and staining of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues.
  • Maintains effective communication including verbal and written skills, and articulate concerns and updates in a professional manner.
  • Completes all assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Works proficiently in a fluctuating work environment, including maintaining productivity during laboratory down-time.
  • Embraces new duties when needed, following appropriate instruction and supervision.
  • Performs basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office.
  • Understands and articulates basic medical terminology and laboratory functions.

Physical Capabilities:
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Qualifications

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required

Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered by the ASCP
