What You Will Do

The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a senior engineer to lead a large, collaborative and dynamic team to develop, manufacture, test, deploy, and operate state-of-the-art space payloads. This person will be Chief Engineer, supporting the Project Leader and working with diverse technical staff, for our Space and Atmospheric Burst Reporting System (SABRS) program.

The responsibilities for this position include:
  • Establish and maintain appropriate engineering policies and approaches, especially for the design and production of the next generation of SABRS Prime payloads.
  • Maintain cognizance, within the project, of legacy payload construction and engineering operations, to troubleshoot on-orbit systems.
  • Support the interface engineering with satellite hosts.
  • Lead tasks as assigned by the Project Leader, which could include evaluations, specific design issues, preparation for major reviews, etc.
  • Act as a member of the project leadership team, which manages costs, schedules, scope, personnel, progress, etc.

The position will be filled in either the Electrical Engineering Group (ISR-4), or the Mechanical Engineering Group (ISR-5). ISR specializes in space-based radiation measurements for national security and basic science missions. We also develop systems for terrestrial and airborne applications along with the requisite ground support and test equipment. Our work receives funding and requirements from the DOE, DOD, NASA, and other government agencies. Projects are executed through a close interaction among all disciplines of engineers, technicians, and scientists, which fosters a highly creative and dynamic research and development environment. ISR activities support all aspects of capability, from concept development to operational support after launch or field deployment.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical, mechanical or software engineering design from concept through production
  • Demonstrated experience developing system architectures and concepts that were successfully implemented and utilized
  • Demonstrated experience in system test, integration & validation
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical anomaly resolutions and debugging efforts

Technical Leadership:
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineers, technologists & technicians for medium to large projects
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage projects
  • Demonstrated ability to define project and program strategies and directions

Communication:
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with all levels of staff and customers
  • Experience networking effectively with others outside one's own area of expertise

Collaboration:
  • Proven ability to work independently and in multi-organizational teams
  • Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork, technical excellence, innovation, and creativity
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and changing priorities and to create detailed action plans

Team Dynamics:
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of technicians, engineers, and scientists at all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple and concurrent team tasks

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

ABET Accreditation Preferred

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with space flight and high-reliability hardware development and testing methods
  • Experience developing gamma and/or neutron detection instruments
  • Experience leading engineers and technicians from design concept through completed systems
  • Experience with Radiation Hardness Assurance programs and Military Standard parts, such as those called out in Defense Supply Center Columbus and what that means for specifying electronic parts
  • Demonstrated experience working with and handling classified information.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
