The USC Price Office of Communication seeks a talented writer who will highlight the work of students, faculty members, staff, researchers and alumni across the USC Price School. The writer will focus on finding and telling interesting stories that elevate the schoolâ??s mission and its regional and national impact. The successful candidate will join an energetic and highly motivated team whose members take their jobs seriously but not themselves, who support one another and who value curiosity, hard work and a healthy work-life balance. The successful candidate is comfortable talking with a wide range of people and turning those conversations into clean, engaging copy. They embrace innovative ways to tell stories â?? including writing content for websites, social media, email, newsletters, podcasts and videos. Theyâ??re an organized self-starter who enjoys working collaboratively. This position reports to the Senior Communications Manager. Duties and responsibilities: Interview and maintain positive relationships with faculty and staff members, researchers, students and other USC community members. Discover, pitch and write your own news and feature stories for USC Price School media and for broader USC media such as USC News (news.usc.edu). Remain up to date on current events and breaking news that could provide new opportunities for faculty to share their expertise. Write copy for social media posts related to editorial content. Write announcements and other content as assigned about Price School initiatives and milestones, major administrative changes, conferences and community outreach efforts and events. Write copy for advertisements associated with academic conferences. Manage projects using project management software (Box and Asana). Use Google Analytics and other tools to track and analyze performance of editorial content and stories that are covered by the media. Generate media pitch lists. Contribute ideas and expertise across the department and pitch in on projects as needed. Communicate regularly with team members. Required qualifications: Bachelorâ??s degree in journalism, English, public relations, or related field 5 years paid writing experience in professional media organization (news, magazine, digital media) and/or communications department. Experience covering topics related to public policy, government, politics, law, and/or higher education. Established body of work around these topics with a portfolio that demonstrates story-telling ability and an authentic voice. Professionalism and attention to schedules, detail and accuracy. Sound news judgment and demonstrated experience writing engaging articles. Knowledge of AP Style and experience with different forms of writing and different writing voices (e.g., long-form journalistic features; web content; internal announcements). Comfort with project management tools (Asana), email newsletter creation (Constant Contact) and content management (Box). Familiarity with different social media channels and experience creating social media content. Preferred qualifications Familiarity with telling stories through photography, video, audio and social media-native content or willingness to learn them.
