The Communications Manager, situated in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), supports the vast research enterprise at the University of Iowa, which includes administrative and compliance infrastructure, a public health laboratory, and a center for undergraduate research. By working with OVPR and its reporting units to develop and deploy impactful communications through various channels, including to an internal audience of researchers and scholars, this role supports the organization's goals to partner with researchers to celebrate their successes at every stage and to ensure safety and compliance. The role is responsible for writing and deploying communications via traditional and social media designed for various target audiences, including but not limited to: current UI faculty, staff, and students; media; and the general public. This role also manages high-profile events for the office. A hybrid work schedule - a combination of remote and on-campus work - is allowable for this position. The Office of the Vice President for Research has as its goal the support and advancement of research, scholarship, and creative activity on our campus. Through a broad variety of activities and services, the Office of the Vice President for Research seeks to play an important role in the underpinning of these creative activities in the public and private sectors in our region. Qualifications: Education or Equivalency Required Master's degree in strategic communications, public relations, marketing, or journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Required Qualifications Typically 3 years of communications and marketing experience. Proven ability to work on an effective communication plan to achieve organizational goals. Superb strategic planning, writing, editing and communication skills, as demonstrated through press releases and published stories. This will be demonstrated through three work samples, including at least two writing samples, submitted with the application. Knowledge of and demonstrated experience using social media strategically to reach key stakeholder audiences. Demonstrated commitment to prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in communications and in the workplace. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks while achieving a high degree of accuracy. Demonstrated experience planning and executing events, including implementing effective marketing tools to build audience. A commitment to fostering positive work relationships, while working transparently and collaboratively. Highly Desirable Qualifications 5 years, or more, of communications and marketing experience, is highly desired. Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of higher education issues in the public sector, including relations with state and federal governments, and other important external and internal constituencies and audiences. Demonstrated experience in designing and/or specifying market research to serve as a tool in strategic communications. Demonstrated experience working in a web content management system (CMS), knowledge about writing for the web, and experience implementing federal accessibility standards for digital communications. Demonstrated experience creating multimedia products.
