HJF is seeking a Research Associate III to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MHRP.

The Laboratory of Integrative Multiomics, led by Dr. Rasmi Thomas, uses cutting-edge next-generation sequencing technologies to identify variation in genes involved in host-pathogen interactions. We are at the forefront of developing these technologies for analysis of transcriptomes of single cells and detection of transcripts from intracellular pathogens. The group integrates transcriptomics with other 'omics' datasets, such as proteomics and epigenomics, to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying disease acquisition, pathogenesis and response to vaccination. We are looking for a candidate with a molecular biology background and experience with flow cytometry to investigate host restriction factors in infectious diseases, including HIV-1, dengue and zika, in the context of natural infection, treatment, and vaccine studies. The successful candidate will have experience designing and carrying out molecular and cellular biology assays to test given hypotheses. Experience in next-generation sequencing techniques will be an advantage. The incumbent will work independently to conduct research projects and to develop new technologies and laboratory protocols. The candidate will be able to multi-task and prioritize project timelines when necessary. Strong communication and collaborative skills are essential.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking a Research Associate III to perform research and/or development in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. Exercise technical discretion in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Provide training and guidance for lower level Research Associates and laboratory staff.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts research in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff within our group. (20%)
  • Performs complex data analysis and interpretation. (20%)
  • Develops and documents methods and procedures for experiments and data analyses. (40%)
  • Prepares research data for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals. (10%)
  • Mentors, reviews, and supervises junior laboratory staff in the planning, execution, and analysis of experiments. (10%)
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.
  • Background in immunology and experience with flow cytometry.
  • Experience designing and carrying out molecular and cellular biology assays to test given hypotheses.
  • Ability to meet deadlines of projects, multi-task and work independently.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Work Environment
  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory and/or clinical setting.

Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree required, PHD preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required.
