This is a 100% limited position for one (1) year with possibility of extension or conversion to career status based on the needs of the department and availability of funding. DESCRIPTION The Lab Assistant will assist in investigating the mechanisms that regulate brain cells and the connections between them. The goal of the research is to understand how specialized neurotransmitters called neuromodulators regulate the nervous system and how these processes go awry in human disease. Major focuses of the lab include pain and opioid addiction. This position will primarily support projects involving pain modulation. The Lab Assistant will be responsible for performing surgeries in rodents that involve the delivery of transgenes and implantation of hardware for measuring and manipulating brain activity with light. Will assist with post-operative care, maintenance of surgical records, and execution of behavioral experiments in rodents. The incumbent may also assist with the production of adeno-associated viruses and measurement of hormones in the bloodstream using ELISA assays. Incumbent will also assist with general lab support, which may include ordering supplies, maintaining the mouse colony, maintaining common lab equipment, and ensuring lab is clean safe and in compliance with regulations. May also participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed, when appropriate. QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience OR two (2) years of college including courses in cell biology and one (1) year of laboratory experience in cell biology, microscopy, immunohistochemistry, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with stereotactic surgery in rodents. Familiarity with PCR-based genotyping. Experience with and understanding of laboratory equipment, such as light microscopes, scales, pH meter. Experience and skill with MAC or PC programs, filemaking, spreadsheet, and graphics software; willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed. Sensitivity to the needs and humane treatment of caged laboratory animals in compliance with AAALAC standards. Demonstrated communication (English) and organizational skills, including ability to keep clear and accurate records and follow written and oral lab protocols. Must be flexible and able to function in a fast-paced and changing work environment. Skill and knowledge to maintain an organized lab and stocks of essential supplies and reagents, purchase lab supplies and equipment, oversee equipment repairs, and ensure lab equipment is running efficiently and maintained properly. Some knowledge, understanding and experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement. Ability to hire, train and provide work direction to undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in various lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage, laboratory maintenance, etc). Successful, positive interpersonal oral and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Skill to interact effectively with faculty, academics, students, and staff including those of diverse ethnicity, culture, and foreign nationals. Familiarity with specialized scientific terminology especially as it is related to neuroscience and neuropharmacology. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Must be able to work with rodents as experimental animals. Must be able to work safely with lab chemicals and biohazardous materials. Must be willing to work overtime periodically during the evening or weekend when necessary for experiments.
