NP or PA of the Student Health Center is responsible for supporting the overall operation of the Student Health Center to include development and implementation of Student Health Center policies, procedures, and clinical protocols in accordance with  NYSDOH  regulations. As a Nurse Practitioner and or Physician Assistant , provides comprehensive and episodic ambulatory care for students, coordinates with Athletics and Counseling services as needed for student care, and serves as a consultant to the University community regarding public health issues.

Medical Responsibilities:

Diagnose, evaluate, treat and manage acute and chronic illness, disease and injury within protocols or in consultation with collaborating physicians or referring to another health care provider. Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations. Order and obtain laboratory specimens. Interpret and record laboratory test results and order additional laboratory testing when indicated. Prescribe medications as appropriate under regulations of the NYSDOH  and the  DEA .

Maintain, review, and update patient charts in electronic medical records, review medical information for student affiliations/clinical rotations, and student athletes.

Maintain Limited Laboratory Registration per NYSDOH   CLIA  license to provide in-office testing for Glucose, Hemoglobin, Mononucleosis, Pregnancy,  HIV , Strep Antigens, Urinalysis, and Direct Wet Mount Preps.

Provide health screenings and immunizations.

Provide education and counseling in areas of health maintenance and reproductive health ensuring that services provided in the Student Health Center comply with policies and procedures of the University.

Assists the Executive Director for Student Health and Wellness Center and Student Development and Counseling staff with maintaining continuity of care and providing for coordination of services within the Student Wellness Center.

Participate in continuing professional education to update clinical skills and knowledge base.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Hire, supervise, and evaluate Student Health Center staff, including administrative support staff, nursing staff, and contract staff to include physicians, psychiatric providers.

Assist the Executive Director with the preparation and submission of the annual budget for the Student Health Center.  

Assist the Executive Director with the developing, implementing, and evaluating the Student Health Center policies and procedures.

Prepare and submit annual reports to NYSDOH  as required by law. 

Collect and maintain immunization records in compliance with  NYS  Public Health Law. Collect and review health forms submitted by students.

Provide appropriate medical and social referral when indicated. Ensure confidentiality and accurate record keeping.

Work with Athletics staff to provide athletic clearances for student athletes per  NCAA  requirements.

Provide input in selection of student health insurance plans.

Attends and participates in divisional meetings, including all-staff and directors’ meetings.

Serves as a member of the emergency response team when appropriate, including working closely with  the Emergency Management Response Office procedures and or campus initiatives related to the health center.  

Participate and engage in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ( DEI ) initiatives and programs, including but not limited to serving on  DEI  committees, serving as a diversity advocate or community liaison for a job search, advising a club, facilitating  DEI -related training, and engagement in institutional cultural and celebratory events and programming.

Takes an active role in the development of the department’s strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership.   Works closely with the department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success.  

Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators.

Supervision :

Utica University employees: collaborates the daily operations of the center with one Registered Nurse

Works closely to support and assist the Executive Director with  contract personnel:  Two physicians and a psychiatric provider 

Requirements:

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or school of physician Assistant

Graduate of nurse practitioner program or physician assistant

Current New York State license as a Registered Professional Nurse or physician assistant

Current license to practice as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner or physician assistant

National Certification as FNP  or  ANP  or PA

Strong leadership and administrative skills.
