What You Will Do
Employ your engineering talents by joining our world class team! Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated, self-driven Non-Destructive Assay (NDA) Engineer to join our Nuclear Materials Support Service (NPI-9) group to support either day or swing shift operations.

NPI-9 provides NDA and other measurement support functions in support of operations at the LANL Plutonium Facility. This is your chance to make a real difference while working on and supporting important research directly impacting national security.

The NDA Engineer 2/3 (R&D Engineer 2/3) will report to the Technical Support Team First Line Manager in the NPI-9 group within the Nuclear Process Infrastructure Division. The NPI-9 Technical Support Team is responsible for a large variety of NDA processes and operates within multiple locations in the Plutonium Facility.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 2 or R&D Engineer level 3, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional Job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 2 ($96,100 -$159,000)

As an R&D Engineer 2 your duties will include the following:
  • Work with other engineers/researchers and technicians to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot NDA equipment used for measuring special nuclear materials (SNM).
  • Manage and coordinate NDA equipment repair and maintenance at the LANL Plutonium Facility.
  • Help develop and implement new NDA processes to provide solutions for future NDA measurement needs.
  • Keep current on the status of the NDA processes and technologies.
  • Help solve engineering problems while maintaining designated equipment for NDA operations.
  • Assist in the development of technical products such as journal papers and reports, the development of intellectual property.
  • Scope tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level.
  • Provide peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.


R&D Engineer 3 ($115,500 -$194,900)

In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level duties will include:
  • Identify ideas for improving NDA operations or capabilities, and then lead the development and implementation of these ideas.
  • Set direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person.
  • Lead specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Develop mentoring skills to mentor junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

R&D Engineer 2:

NDA Systems: At least 2 years of professional level experience using one or more of the following NDA systems; passive/active neutron counters, tomographic gamma-scanning, far-field gamma spectroscopy, isotopic gamma-ray measurement systems, or calorimetry systems.

Statistical Methods: Demonstrated knowledge of statistical methods used for NDA data analysis methods.

Interpersonal Skills: Strong skills and initiative in organization, planning, teamwork, customer interactions, and interpersonal communications.

Job Performance: Demonstrated ability to work productively on multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

Documentation of Work: Demonstrated ability to develop technical products such as journal papers and reports.

Compliance: Demonstrated experience in conducting scientific/engineering work while complying with ES&H requirements and using appropriate administrative controls, engineering controls, and personal protective equipment.

DOE: DOE 426.2 Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, 2 years of job related experience, and 1 year of nuclear experience.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university and 4 years related experience or an equivalent of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 3

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires at least 5 years of professional level experience using one or more of the following NDA systems; passive/active neutron counters, tomographic gamma-scanning, far-field gamma spectroscopy, isotopic gamma-ray measurement systems, or calorimetry systems.

Desired Qualifications:

NDA Software: Experience using any of the following NDA data acquisition/analysis software; INCC, FRAM, Maestro, Program Isotopic, SNAP, Peak Easy, Peak Doctor, GADRAS, or ISOCS.

NDA Modeling: Experience using MCNP.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q L or Q or Q/SCI(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
