Department: MED-Ophthalmology Salary/Grade: NEX/9 Job Summary: Conducts tests and procedures.  Sets up and operates equipment. Records observations, measurements, collects and compiles data in a research setting. Requires a practical understanding of a limited number of standard scientific techniques. Under supervision of the lab manager, this position is responsible for the daily routine operation and maintenance of lab experiments and mouse colony. Responsibilities include making easy and complex solutions, managing the mouse colony, genotyping, immunohistochemistry staining, and electrophysiology experiments. Specific Responsibilities : Technical Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical & Good Laboratory Practices & conducts standard & repetitive experiments & completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.  Sets-up, operates & maintains standard lab equipment. Solution making Managing the mouse colony Genotyping and Immunohistochemistry Electrophysiology experiments  Administration Records test results, maintains databases, may summarize and interpret research data. Completes standard & routine clerical duties such as copying, filing, data entry, word processing, etc.  Maintains inventory of reagents, mice & lab supplies.    May contribute to portions of grant applications and co-author scientific papers. Skills Histology: Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining Immunohistochemistry Microscopy Animal: Husbandry Breeding  and screening transgenic mice Dissections Blood collection Surgical procedures Database management of colony Minimum Qualifications: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required; OR Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year lab/bench or other relevant experience. Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.) 1-5 years experience in a research or clinical laboratory 1- 2 years experience working with mice and electrophysiology techniques Effective interpersonal skills (Collaboration) Strong written and verbal skills Attention to detail Capacity to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and to recognize when to seek supervisory assistance. Hazardous materials Research regulations Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and training experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
