What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Nuclear Material Control & Accountability (NMCA) personnel in the Safeguards Division are responsible for overseeing the Decontamination & Decommission (D&D) activities across Technical Areas (TA) which involve the handling and disposition of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) and other accountable Nuclear Material (NM). The NMCA Group is seeking an enthusiastic individual to provide nuclear material safeguards oversight in support of the Weapons Program. The successful candidate will need to have a strong attention to detail, questioning attitude, and excellent interpersonal skills necessary to provide nuclear accountability oversight in a D&D - operational blended work environment.

This position will be filled at either the D&D Material Control & Accountablity Specialist 2/D&D Material Control & Accountablity Specialist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

D&D Material Control & Accountablity Specialist 2 $77,300 - $126,000

As a D&D Material Controls & Accountability Specialist 2 (D&D MBA Custodian) you will ensure compliance with Material Control and Accountability requirements while working with staff from the D&D program to ensure the success of the critical work in support of LANL mission objectives and National Security interests. You will perform oversight for NMCA of legacy material, material holdup, and waste items in the field and LANL NMCA accounting system. You will track all accountable items and ensure physical protective measures are continuously in place in accordance with a security plan until off-site shipment is performed. Additionally, the D&D MBA Custodian will monitor, analyze, and document nuclear material values in internal and external databases and determine significance of any analytical variances. The D&D MBA Custodian will need to be able to work independently due to the requirement of some non-traditional shift work supporting the D&D program.

D&D Material Control & Accountablity Specialist 3 $85,400 - $139,600

In addition to what is outlined at the Specialist 2 level, at the level 3 position you will ensure nuclear material control and accountability procedure and regulations are being adhered to, assist staff from the D&D program on preparing for holdup measurements, inventory, provide guidance on how the D&D program will remain in compliance while planning and performing D&D activities, respond to abnormal conditions, participate in fact findings and process improvement exercises, and mentor less experienced staff.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in at least one of the following: nuclear facility operations, MBA custodian duties, application of NMCA requirements of process operations, or chemical/physical processes dealing with nuclear material.
  • Experience analyzing, monitoring, and balancing holdup and/or inventory data following accounting good practices, inventory cycles, and/or holdup measurements.
  • Experience in participating in nuclear material physical inventories and/or holdup measurements.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, analytical skills, and the ability to execute accounting decisions consistent with NMCA procedures, regulatory drivers, and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Intermediate skill and experience with Microsoft Excel for report generation, presentation and trending.


Additional Job Requirements for Material Control & Accoutability Specialist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in at least one of the following: nuclear facility operations, MBA custodian duties, application of NMCA requirements of process operations, or chemical/physical processes dealing with nuclear material.
  • Experience working in a D&D work environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NMCA requirements as outlined in DOE O 474.2
  • Extensive experience with the use of nuclear material accountability systems such as LANMAS.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience interpreting inventory transactions to ensure good business practices and adherence to policies on accounting for nuclear materials.


Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience directly related to the occupation. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of TA55-RD-585 Nuclear Materials Control and Accountability Requirements.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, scientific work and/or operations within one or more Material Balance Areas in TA-55.
  • Experience with implementing successful process improvement projects designed to improve both efficiency and quality.

  • This position will require some non-traditional shift work, which includes swing shift, mid-shift, or back-shift. Workdays Monday - Thursday with occasional weekend work to support the construction projects at TA-55. The non-traditional shift work schedule can offer a shift differential of the basic hourly rate as applicable to P765 Employee Time and Labor.
  • While the posted salary range for this position is broad, it is highly unusual for selected applicants to be hired at the top end of the range and more common for selected candidates to grow into the full salary band over time.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
