The McKesson Tax Accounting team is hiring a Senior Tax Manager - Indirect Tax in Irving TX.

Position Description

We have a current need for a Senior Tax Manager - Indirect Tax. The responsibilities include: managing indirect transaction tax compliance activities ensuring compliance with all 50 U.S. States and Puerto Rico taxing jurisdiction rules, regulations, and reporting requirements for assigned Businesses, and reviewing / approving tax returns of team members; assisting Director - Indirect Tax and VP - Indirect Taxes with project work, as assigned; engaging with assigned business unit personnel to provide sales/use tax transaction consulting, understand business changes to provide business unit with the sales /use tax implications and incorporate any changes into compliance activities, where applicable. Also responsible for ensuring accurate and timely sales/use tax liability account reconciliations and associated journal entries are recorded, assisting with implementing acquisition compliance procedures, authoring, and maintaining SOPs for assigned businesses, assisting on SUT audits, as needed, as well as other projects as identified. Responsible for the managing, mentoring, and development of at least 3 SUT compliance team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages activities of functional area through first level managers and specialist individual contributors. Assists with the development of group, function, department goals, performance standards / metrics. Accountable for customer satisfaction, programs, products, employees for assigned area of responsibility.
  • Partners with Director - Indirect Tax on identifying process improvement initiatives. Takes the lead in implementing agreed on initiatives. Examples of such initiatives include projects to streamline processes for the company's tax collection and self-accrual, reporting, and remittance responsibilities for assigned businesses. Also interfaces with other members of the Tax Team concerning improvement initiatives.
  • Liaison with internal cross-functional teams to develop integrated compliance reporting to facilitate sales and use tax reporting processes.
  • Works with indirect tax leadership and assigned business leaders concerning appropriate use tax accruals / remittances on purchases and inventory withdrawals.
  • Researching taxability of products and services as needed for assigned businesses, special projects, new acquisitions, coordinating with Director - Indirect Taxes, Transaction Tax Research Group, and VP - Indirect Taxes.
  • Maintains accurate tax return preparation SOP for assigned businesses.
  • Prepares and completes tax returns and reports involved with state, local, sales, and other tax liabilities. Responsible for meeting all required deadlines, preparing check/EFT requests and associated information / documentation for journal entries, updating the tax calendar, preparing account reconciliations as needed and required, maintaining accurate record keeping of the filed tax returns and supporting documentation. Maintains current knowledge of all tax laws affecting the company. Reviews proposals for tax implications and recommends actions that meet the business plans while managing the tax liability. Assists in tax audits and other duties as determined relating to the compliance function.
  • Review and approve sales / use tax returns of other businesses per department requirement.
  • Partner with the assigned business leaders, Indirect SUT compliance team, and Indirect Tax audit team concerning appropriate use tax accruals / remittances on purchases and inventory withdrawals.
  • Identify process improvements for the assigned businesses' tax return compliance activities, based on tax return reviews, and work with colleagues to achieve consensus and implement quantitative and qualitative material improvements.
  • Other research projects as identified by Director - Indirect Tax and VP - Indirect Tax.

Minimum Requirements

Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 9+ years of professional experience and 1+ years of supervisory and/or management experience.

Critical Skills

  • 8+ years of accounting experience.
  • 8+ years of sales tax return prep experience, with at least 2 years of experience in sales tax compliance in the healthcare industry.
  • 8+ years of people management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sales and use tax from a nationwide level, including home rule jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated competence with Vertex Returns Software.
  • Demonstrated competence with JD Edwards and working knowledge of multiple additional ERPs including SAP, PeopleSoft, etc.
  • Demonstrated competence of MS Excel at an intermediate level.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated competence in research, analysis, and application of law.

Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated competence in compliance activities, including data retrieval, analysis, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated competence and success in meeting internal and external required sales / use tax return deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate and communicate complex or difficult tax concepts to others in a plain and understandable manner. Strong customer service orientation and project management skills. High level of ethics, integrity, discretion, and confidentiality.


A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is highly desired, or equivalent work experience in a related field.

Traditional office requirements.Large percentage of time performing computer-based work is required.
