Scheduled Hours 40 Position Summary Seeking a staff scientist to conduct research projects and assist with research activities of the Karch Lab at Washington University School of Medicine. The Karch Lab is focused on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying tauopathies and other neurodegenerative diseases, through the utilization of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) as a model system. Applicant will become a crucial member of an NIH funded international effort to establish patient derived iPSC lines to study dementia. The ideal candidate should be capable of spearheading independent projects, in addition to providing collaborative and supportive supervision, protocol optimization, and troubleshooting. This position assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis and documentation of experimental results. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Following instructions and discussions with principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data. Performs iPSC culture and conducts downstream experiments and screening assays. Utilizes CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to perform genomic editing. Organizes, optimizes and performs iPSC-derived differentiation techniques. Optimizes various molecular biology assays to ensure consistent and reliable results. Works closely with project coordinators, staff scientists, trainees, and technical staff to ensure the success of projects. Assists with grant preparation and reporting. Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses. Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers. Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical and procedural improvements in testing methods. Conducts literature searches related to research project. Working Conditions This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals. Preferred Qualifications: Masterâ™s degree or Ph.D. in field relevant to studying neurodegeneration. Experience with techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry. Experience with methods in cell culture and aseptic technique (iPSC culture experience is not required). Possess a strong understanding of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing system. Organized, independent, and self-motivated. Demonstrated ability to be highly productive in a fluid and collaborative work environment. Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Analytical reasoning and problem solving skills. Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data and to communicate data in a clear, concise manner. Computer literacy, including the ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data. Required Qualifications Masterâ™s degree with four years of experience in research lab operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling nine years. Grade R10 Salary Range $44,700.00 - $81,200.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
