Lead Compensation and Benefits Strategies to Help Differentiate a $3+ Billion Innovator in Healthcare Talent Solutions

Role Overview

Reporting to the Chief People Officer (CPO), you will provide leadership and direction to 25+ people divided into five teams, namely the Compensation Department, the Commissions Department, the HRIS Department, and the Benefits and Wellness Department.
Continuous improvement in compensation

We are in the process of developing stronger comp programs at all levels, but we are always reviewing, refining, and updating them to remain relevant and appropriate in a highly dynamic industry. For example, we have five executive compensation meetings annually. Your internal clients will include the entire C-suite, General Counsel, the Chair of the Board's Compensation Committee, a Compensation Consultant, and leaders of Sales and other departments. You will also interact with external partners, such as systems vendors and comp survey providers. The CPO reports to the Compensation Committee, so you will act as their right hand in this regard.
Innovative benefits strategies

While you will be involved in both strategy and tactics on the compensation side, regarding benefits you will take a more high-level approach. We outsource most benefits administration, leaving you free to focus on strategy. This is where you can showcase your creativity: our benefits plan must be one that differentiates us from other healthcare staffing firms so that we can ensure a pool of exceptional clinicians.

Role Specifics

More specifically, your main responsibilities will cover the following areas:
  • Review, evaluate, redesign, and manage total compensation of our sales teams to ensure programs support our sales objectives, reward team members for performance, and are relevant and appropriate within the market, legally correct, and effectively communicated.
  • Assist in the development of executive compensation packages and reporting, including the preparation of reporting materials for the Compensation Committee and review of the Compensation Discussion & Analysis in our annual proxy.
  • Advise on the development and administration of base compensation programs including job descriptions, performance evaluations, competitor market analysis, policies and procedures, merit increases and other ad hoc compensation adjustments.
  • Create and manage our overall benefits strategy.
  • Review, evaluate, redesign, and manage benefits programs annually to position us as an employer of choice.
  • Manage relationships with benefits providers, including establishing advantageous pricing.
  • Have responsibility for corporate-wide annual incentive plan design and administration.
  • Analyze new and existing job descriptions to determine the appropriate exemption classification, title and compensation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing advice and guidance to leaders and HR business partners on company compensation and benefits philosophy, packages, and standard methodologies.
  • Supervise the commission function's responsibility for the administration and processing of all incentive-based plans throughout the organization.
  • Establish a coaching and mentorship structure for team members to help them achieve personal growth.
The Ideal Candidate

If you are a strong "hands on" low ego style Senior Compensation & Benefits leader with tenacity and a background in both sales incentives and preparing presentations for public company boards of directors, this could be a superb opportunity to move up and broaden your sphere of influence. If you have experience interacting directly with board members, then that is even better!

To be a strong fit, we are looking for:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in Human Resources, Personnel Administration, Management, or other related field, while an MBA, CCP, CBP or other relevant professional certification would be an added advantage.
  • Significant progressively responsible multi-state experience in total rewards administration, including public companies with proven success in developing and implementing strategic plans for both compensation and benefits, complemented by willingness to get hands on to achieve goals.
  • Experience with sales incentive design.
  • SME with Workday and familiarity with Microsoft Offices applications, and payroll (UltiPro) systems.

  • High energy with a positive and upbeat style, with the desire to put in the effort to thrive under executive-level pressure.
You should also be willing and able to travel approximately 10-20% percent of the time.

Along with having relevant leadership experience, solid understanding, and proficiency in Total Rewards, you should have the demeanor, competencies and behaviors that will quickly result in you gaining the confidence and respect of all team members. Without ego, you will participate as a trusted member of the HR leadership team. You will have the maturity to manage sophisticated and confidential matters, and the constitution to handle pressure and unpredictability in a focused environment.

The characteristic that best describes those who excel in our environment is a combination of professionalism and grit. With our pace, balance is imperative as too much structure slows us down. We do our due diligence with research and analysis, but the emphasis is on results, not process. This pace, however, is no excuse for anything less than top quality work. The spreadsheets you submit to the Chair of the Board's Compensation Committee, for example, must be clear, focused, and error-free.

The stakes and pressure will be high, so bring your "A" game every day (and sometimes on weekends and holidays). You should be articulate and keep your expertise honed so that you can answer questions "on the fly." You will know you're succeeding when you are gaining consensus from senior leadership on your ideas and approaches.
