Summary Description

Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Office in Duke Radiology, Human Resources Department Director supports Duke Radiology in the strategic and work culture leadership of the department.  The role will be integral to our leadership team and will include budgeting and planning for the Duke Radiology portfolio, leading recruitment and selection, advising on change management, assisting managers with expectations and accountability,  championing team development, navigating the complexities of building an increasingly international and hybrid workforce, and leading the organization's work culture initiatives. 



  • Provide strong organizational leadership for the Department of Radiology, a growing clinical, research, and academic enterprise and partner at all levels of the organization to assure the success of the team.
  • Lead key strategies for the department including strategic planning and implementation, organizational planning, recruitment and selection, change management, team expectations and accountabilities, and work culture improvement.
  • Manage SOM central HR hub team and oversee responsibilities and portfolio of the team.
  • Act as liaison with central HR offices and other clinical department human resources teams, and facilitate responses and actions for department leaders and managers
  • Develop strong culture around coaching and mentorship for department and proactively work with managers to develop new training and development frameworks for their teams.
  • Manage ad hoc and ongoing projects identified by the needs of the business, including but not limited to:
    • HR compliance related centralization (e.g., OSHA)
    • COVID related activities including policy alignment and vaccinations
    • Policy and process alignment
    • Manage annual processes such as the Performance Evaluation and Faculty Review and Assessment processes for department as well as compliance related to COVID, Flu, and credentialing as needed.
  • Provide guidance to managers and leadership team related to compensation, diversity and inclusion initiatives, Rewards and Recognition actions, performance expectations and accountability.
  • Lead a multifunctional team to cultivate a spirit of excellence and inclusion by establishing executable goals, respect, great communication, and superb responsiveness.  Streamline and maximize opportunities to improve on all aspects of recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding trainees and faculty.
  • Organizational planning and forecasting:  Lead department in by providing strategic vision for building evolving teams with effective planning and tactics for managers to recruit and select exceptional teams.   
    • Recruiting:  Collaborate with hiring managers to develop job descriptions and navigate approval processes, develop policy and manage recruiting and selection processes, assist with offer letters including approvals and negotiate candidate compensation, conduct interviews and collaborate on onboarding/orientation for new employees.
    • Provide support and guidance to managers on talent acquisition and retention activities, including but not limited to, the development of search plans and strategic recruitment strategies/initiatives, applicant sourcing and selection, job description development and position management, and temporary recruitment needs ensuring compliance with EEO and other applicable requirements.
  • Create consistent onboarding programs for faculty and staff positions
  • Develop compensation benchmarking for department and advise on proactive compensation adjustments and promotions for teams
  • Advise managers on pay issues, affirmative action requirements, position classification issues, performance appraisal, employee relations and employee training and development issues; maintain liaison with Human Resources and other appropriate offices and departments to respond to employee problems, issues, and special requests and to facilitate actions.
  • Collaborate with HR Service Center on all Visa sponsorship and applications (including gathering of required documents, Duke Web Form completion and requisition of checks) for Radiology staff working closely with the Visa Services office
  • Advise and assist management, faculty and staff in the handling of employee relations issues, complaints and/or grievances and determination of appropriate disciplinary actions; represent management at grievance hearings, dismissal conferences and arbitration.
  • Interpret human resource policy intent and/or acceptable management practices to ensure fair and consistent application of University policy; develop departmental policies in accordance with established University policy.

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • 5+ years in human resources or administrative role with HR
  • Prior staff management experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Duke@Work, SAP, and Success Factors preferred
  • Project management skills
  • Solid organizational and analytical abilities

Required Qualifications At This Level

Education/Training: Work requires a general business or personnel background generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience: Work requires five years of business and/or administrative experience, with exposure to human resources activities, to acquire knowledge of human resources policies and procedures necessary to manage the personnel activities of a major department or division.OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.
