What You Will Do

J-2 is seeking an R&D Engineer (Level 3 or 4) to provide engineering leadership and support for various integrated projects (a set of related technical and/or operational activities needed to produce specific products or services to meet customer requirements). This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer Level 3 or Level 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. J-2's mission is to provide engineering and fielding support to programs for development and field installation of dynamically loaded structures.

R&D Engineer 3- $115,500 - 194,900

The selected candidate will be responsible for providing the interface between customer base and program/project teams from across the Laboratory and external for our operations at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Primary responsibilities include coordinating, integrating, and ensuring execution of the engineering and operations experiment lifecycle elements (i.e., requirements definition, design, analysis, fabrication and inspection oversight, assembly, staging, testing, and documentation) by being the engineering point of contact for engineers, designers, and technologists supporting these projects and will report to the J-2 Group Leader and interface with the SCE Test Director. Moderate travel to Nevada is required. this position will serve to support

R&D Engineer 4 - $138,700 - 240,500

In addition to what is outlined at the Engineer level 3, as an engineer level 4, the engineer is expected to support and be the lead technical point of contact of multiple Functional Managers, Project Managers, Program Managers, and Program Directors in championing and ensuring formality, discipline, safety, security, and compliance. The engineer will report to the J-2 Group Leader and will be accountable to other Program Managers and Program Directors. The engineer will be responsible for the coordination of engineering requirements for multiple test beds in NV and will ensure, Conduct of Engineering principles are followed, lead technical reviews, and be the lead contact with our collaboration groups and other DOE laboratories for our operational missions in NNSS.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience in leading the planning, designing, testing, fielding, and execution of research and development projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated experience in developing and implementing technical requirements, specifications, plans, reports, and procedures for a complex design.
  • Experience in small to large-scale design, fabrication, and inspection methods and processes.
  • Experience in use and application of consensus standards in particular; ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Divisions 1, 2, and 3, API 579 Fitness for Service code, and AWS Welding Code.
  • Experience in engineering and operations for moderate to high hazard facilities including Hazard Categorization 2 and 3 Nuclear Facilities.

In addition to Job Requirements for R&D Engineer3, a Level 4:
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor a variety of multi-disciplined team efforts to completion while effectively interacting with all levels of personnel; developing and nurturing effective customer and stakeholder relationships; building trust, negotiating, gaining consensus, establishing and maintaining budgets, and resolving conflicts.
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering design, analysis, and testing (or some combination thereof) of statically and dynamically loaded structures, systems, and components (small, medium, and large scale).
  • Working knowledge of and experience in designing to DOE and Institutional Safety Management Programs (e.g., Integrated Work Management, High Explosives Safety, Hoisting and Rigging, Conduct of Engineering, Conduction of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Configuration Management, Quality Assurance, etc.)

Education/Experience for Level 3: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Education/Experience for Level 4: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in engineering and deploying systems that incorporate High Explosives (HE)
  • Experience in engineering and deploying systems that incorporate hazardous and radioactive materials

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
