What You Will Do

The Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group (T-3) has multiple available post-doctoral research opportunities. We are looking for enthusiastic researchers with a strong background in the areas of solid mechanics, materials modeling, and/or numerical methods. Selected candidates will take leading roles in the development of physics-based and/or data-driven models and computational techniques for the effective representation and prediction of inelastic deformation and/or failure in solid materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of computational methods for the solution of initial- and boundary-value problems involving finite deformation kinematics and/or nonlinear material behaviors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work independently and as an integral part of a team conducting theoretical/computational and experimental work, and the ability to interact effectively with other members of such a diverse team of specialists.

Education: A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, scientific computing, or a related field, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in any of the following topical areas will be considered a plus:
  • Classical and/or crystal plasticity modeling,
  • Phase-field modeling of microstructure evolution processes,
  • Phase-field modeling of damage/fracture in brittle or ductile materials,
  • Nonlocal modeling and generalized continuum theories,
  • Constitutive modeling of polymers,
  • Topology optimization for microstructure design,
  • Formulation and solution of coupled multi-physics problems,
  • Data-driven modeling and (physics-informed) machine learning,
  • Algorithm and code development for massively parallel and emerging architectures.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

COVID Vaccine:

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.
