Solid Organ Transplant Intermediate/Stepdown (6DCT) is a beautiful 37 bed transplant unit in the new Duke Central Tower. We care for the adult Solid Organ Transplant population, which includes liver, kidney, pancreas, small bowel, and abdominal wall. On 6DCT, we care for our transplant patients if they are hospitalized while on the transplant list, during their surgical stay when they receive life-transforming/life-saving organ transplants, and we are their care team any time they return to the hospital. Our goal, as a center of transplant excellence, is to develop an ongoing therapeutic relationship with our patients, while providing extraordinary medical care. Additionally, we care for patients on other surgical services including trauma, orthopedics, GI, and vascular. Being cardiac/telemetry capable, we also provide quality care for overflow patients from a variety of other services. Our staff is committed to providing excellent care to all patients by focusing on their individual needs.

A day in the life of a Registered Nurse in the Transplant Stepdown is NEVER boring.  Our Nurse Residency program will train nurses with skills needed to achieve the goal of saving patients’ lives.  From chronic liver disease, life changing transplants, immunosuppression for rejection, medication management, wound care, central lines, increasing mobilization, labs… to building a valued relationship with patients and their families.  In addition to transplants, this new unit assists Trauma stepdown and vascular patients.

Our 6DCT Nurses say that the “support on this team is very hard to match”.  The PA’s, NP’s and Providers, Nurse Manager, Nurses, and Nursing Assistants work closely together on the same floor.

IMPRESSED? How about our $15,000 sign-on bonus available for Registered Nurses with at least two years of clinical/bedside experience?  And our Tuition Reimbursement of up to 90% OR Generous Loan Forgiveness Program, and Relocation Assistance?  The benefits and perks go on and on…
