The Postdoctoral Appointee will contribute to the development of the understanding of the degradation mechanisms in operation in advanced batteries containing silicon-based negative electrodes by characterizing materials from aged cells. Develop experimental methods and techniques to facilitate this process. Suggest methods to improve the life of advanced batteries and to improve the methods used to estimate battery life.

Position Requirements

A successful candidate will have:
  • Knowledge in the chemistry and characterization of materials; ceramics, glasses, inorganic composites, organic/inorganic composites, and organic substances; interactions of these materials with each other and reactions under various conditions with specific interest in the area of electrochemical devices
  • Knowledge of the physical and chemical principles underlying materials properties, phase equilibria, solid-state chemistry, thermodynamics, organometallic chemistry, organic chemistry and the experimental techniques and methodologies associated with these areas
  • Interpreting and assessing the results of the experimenter's own work and that of others in experiments
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practices
  • Knowledge and understanding to provide novel solutions to battery issues from other areas of materials research, ceramics, and composites

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in materials science, or engineering or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
