Faculty Position Information: Position Title: Professor and Department Chair of Animal Sciences Appointment Type: Faculty Job Description: Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks a Professor and Chair for the Department of Animal Science . Nominations and applications are sought for a visionary leader with demonstrated capacity to lead this department in all its mission areas of teaching, research, extension/outreach/service. The department and college are consistently among the top ranked programs , and have a culture of excellence and accomplishment. The Animal Sciences department portfolio includes undergraduate degrees in animal science and dairy science with minors in meat science, and pre-veterinary medicine, and MS and PhD programs in animal science, meat science, animal breeding and genetics, and animal physiology. Animal Science faculty also participate in a wide range of interdepartmental graduate programs including microbiology, genetics and genomics, immunobiology, sustainable agriculture, neurosciences, toxicology and nutritional sciences. Research focus areas are in breeding and genetics, genomics, nutrition, physiology, meat science and processing, animal well-being and management; and address beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, turkey, swine, sheep, companion animals, laboratory and zoo animals. Facilities are comprehensive including a meat processing plant, species-specific farms and housing complexes, and state-of-the-art research and teaching laboratories and complexes. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to excellence in discipline-leading education of undergraduate and graduate students, interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary research, relevant extension and outreach programs, and innovation across mission areas. The Chair will have a strong connection to Iowaâ??s multi-billion dollar animal agricultural sector and the local-to-global communities linked to the industry. The successful candidate will have a record of supporting and embracing diversity and creating an inclusive, welcoming environment. Specific responsibilities of the position include: Provide visionary leadership for the department to serve the needs of diverse faculty, staff, students, stakeholders and citizens to fulfill the land-grant mission of the department, college and university; Stimulate and facilitate excellence and impact in all aspects of teaching, research, extension/outreach and service; Ensure sound fiscal and budgetary management to achieve the mission of the department and comply with college and university-level policies and practices related to fiscal responsibility and management; Recruit and retain the best possible people in all department positions, while promoting inclusivity, equity, diversity, and a local-to-global outlook; Recruit, retain and enable the success of a diverse and inclusive student body of undergraduate and graduate students who are prepared to excel in the departmental program areas, and including diversity, innovation and leadership aspects of these areas of study and work; Foster an environment of collegiality in which all faculty and staff work to realize the departmentâ??s purposes and are held accountable for their performance; Assist faculty, staff and graduate students to attain resources through extramural funding by encouraging a culture of collaboration and innovation; Encourage and foster interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments, centers, and institutes within and external to the university; Serve the department and the college in accomplishing their missions, and be a collaborative member of the college leadership team across all missions and academic departments; Communicate effectively the mission, vision and strengths of the department and college within Iowa State University and to external stakeholders and collaborators in the public and private sectors; Nurture and maintain effective relationships with external stakeholders, including leaders and members of Iowa's various organizations supporting the program areas in the department and the college, and the general public; Nurture and maintain good alumni relations and build alumni support through the ISU Alumni Association and the ISU Foundation to support the full spectrum of the department's activities, including raising funds for capital projects and endowments to support all missions; and Participate in representational activities on behalf of the department and college, including after-hours and travel as necessary. Position details: Initial Department Chair appointment is for five years with formal review during year four. This appointment serves at the pleasure of the Dean, in an at-will position. The position will be filled as a 9-month appointment with summer salary while serving as Chair. This position has expected percentages of 85% administrative and 15% in a combination of teaching, research, outreach and service.
