Postdoctoral Appointee- ECP Applications and Software Technologies - Military Veterans

The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) is seeking postdoctoral researchers to enable and develop software and scientific applications for one of the world's first exascale systems to be deployed at Argonne National Lab. Successful candidates are expected to work closely with members of the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) to help port scientific software to run on next generation hardware, as well as potentially to enhance the performance and capabilities of the software through algorithmic improvements, code parallelization, performance analysis, and use of novel architectural features.

Argonne National laboratory is a multi-disciplinary research institution offering world-class opportunities in High-Performance Computing and housing the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF), the Mathematics and Computer Science Division (MCS), the Computational Science Division (CPS), and the Data Science and Learning Division (DSL). Successful candidates will work with members of the Aurora Applications Integration team, which is responsible for ensuring that ECP applications and software technologies are properly prepared for the forthcoming Aurora exascale architecture at ALCF.

Position Requirements
  • Recent PhD (within 3 years) or equivalent experience in a computational science discipline, computer science, applied mathematics or in a related field
  • Experience with a computational chemistry package, such as GAMESS or NWChem, and/or adaptive mesh hydrodynamics applications, such as FLASH and CASTRO, and related methods
  • Skill in advanced scientific computing and software development along with experience utilizing and developing for large scale HPC systems
  • Experiencee in one or more scientific programming language such as C, C++, or FORTRAN
  • An understanding of computer architecture and experience in the analysis and improvement of applications performance
  • Experience in GPU programming with one or more parallel computing models, including SYCL, CUDA, MPI, OpenMP, or OpenACC is desired
  • Familiarity with numerical algorithms and their application in one or more scientific domain
  • Ability to create, maintain, and support high-quality software is essential. The successful candidate will be expected to work with and contribute to domain-specific software and models
  • Effective communication skills both verbal and written
  • Skill in interdisciplinary research involving mathematicians, computer scientists, and application scientists
  • Collaborative skills including the ability to work well with other laboratories and universities, supercomputer centers, and industry as well as the ability to communicate well with people of diverse backgrounds and computer knowledge
