The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility's (ALCF) mission is to accelerate major scientific discoveries and engineering breakthroughs for humanity by designing and providing world-leading computing facilities in partnership with the computational science community. We help researchers solve some of the world's largest and most complex problems with our unique combination of supercomputing resources and computational science expertise.

At ALCF, we have a rich and diverse set of logs spanning system logs, job logs and application performance logs. To maintain a robust and reliable supercomputing system there is a critical need to understand various system events, including failures occurring in the system. This is a challenging problem as the data has various resolutions and fidelities, originating from a diverse set of components, spanning text, numerical and categorical data, among others. Mining through the logs will help us better understand science campaigns and application performance, among others.

The goal of this postdoctoral position is to mine through these diverse datasets and build robust and interpretable AI models to help with improving efficiencies spanning science, system operations and user campaigns. The successful candidate will collaborate with diverse colleagues and researchers from the data science team and operations, with system vendors, and with scientists within and outside Argonne. The candidate will be expected to present and publish their work at major conferences and journals.

In this role you will:
  • Research and develop novel methods to analyze supercomputer logs, including Polaris and Aurora
  • Collaborate with diverse scientists on Interpretable AI models
  • Present and publish your work at major conferences and journals
  • Expect your work to be at the forefront of data-centric computing and influence how supercomputers are more effectively used for science

Position Requirements

Required Skills:
  • A recent or soon-to-be completed Ph.D. (typically completed within the last 0-3 years) + 0-3 years of experience in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or related field.
  • Experience using data science to extract knowledge from datasets.
  • Programming experience in a language such as Python and key libraries such as Scikit-learn, NumPy, TensorFlow, PyTorch.
  • Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience in the full life cycle of a data science project, from defining a good problem to deployment.
  • Experience with applying data science methods such as machine learning to real-world messy data, especially time series and text data.
  • Experience and skills in interdisciplinary teams involving mathematicians, computer scientists, and discipline scientists.
  • Experience in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment.
  • Experience with data visualization and databases.
  • Ability to create high-quality software.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
