Under the guidance of a supervisor, the candidate will conduct fundamental research in electrochemical energy storage systems to support the battery performance and cost modeling (BatPaC) group. The project will involve physical, chemical, and electrochemical characterization and multiscale mathematical modeling of advanced battery technologies. The candidate will establish relationships between the physical/chemical properties and electrochemical performance of these cells and batteries.

In this role, the candidate will plan and conduct research on multiscale models for performance and life of energy storage devices, with emphasis on electrochemical options such as lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, using COMSOL, Matlab, Excel and other tools. Knowledge of chemical processes and understanding of process scale-up will be valuable to support cost estimation efforts within the group. Knowledge of, and ability to conduct experimental characterization of cell materials and transport property measurements while adhering to Laboratory and Divisional ESH/QA practices and policies, will be valuable. The candidate will analyze data; prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications; present papers at scientific meetings; and prepare reports, presentations, and papers for group meetings or meeting sponsor reporting requirements.

Position Requirements

We expect the candidate to have:
  • Thorough understanding of electrochemistry, electrochemical engineering, and chemical processing.
  • Experience in mathematical modeling of electrochemical systems.
  • Considerable experience in proposing, planning, designing, and implementing experiments.
  • Knowledge of processing and analyzing results.
  • Considerable skill in formulating scientific problems.
  • Skill in written and oral communication.
  • Experience in experimental cell characterizations.
  • Proven desire to work in a team-based environment.


A successful candidate must have recently completed Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Electrochemistry.
