The Boeing Company is seeking a Rocket Propulsion Engineer – Component Project and Design (Mid-Level) to support the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) contract Exploration Upper Stage hardware development and component delivery. This position leads the technical and project development aspect of a particular piece of spaceflight hardware. Key requirements are technical aptitude, clear communication, and demonstrating leadership ability.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads definition of requirements for propulsion systems, auxiliary power systems and vehicle fuel and tank systems

  • Leads definition, coordination and control of the functional and physical interfaces between the propulsion system and the vehicle

  • Leads development of specifications and architectural and configuration concepts for associated vehicle systems to meet customer and regulatory requirements

  • Leads configuration and design of propulsion sub-systems and components to meet all vehicle design and performance criteria

  • Leads the use of various testing, analysis, modeling and simulation tools to estimate or calculate system performance

  • Leads the definition and performance of certification tests for propulsion sub-systems and components

  • Leads support of fielded systems by developing responses to customer queries and providing technical recommendations

  • Leads development of concepts for future propulsion systems to meet anticipated requirements

  • Limited travel in supporting monthly program reviews and critical milestone reviews

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate may be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 5+ year of experience with propulsion system design principles, processes, and tools for aerospace vehicles and their components, including company and industry standards and practices

  • 5+ year of experience with propulsion system components, interfaces and their design/integration variables, within aerospace vehicles

  • Ability to interface with engine and component suppliers

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience in pressurization systems including composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV), pneumatic valves, solenoid valves for cryogenic and liquid systems (liquid oxygen (LO2), liquid hydrogen (LH2) helium (He) and nitrogen (N2))

  • Knowledge and experience in Propulsion Component definition, development, design, procurement, test and integration

  • Experience in liquid rocket motor propulsion components including cryogenic valves, filters and feedlines for liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LO2) fuel systems

  • Oxygen and Hydrogen compatibility experience is a plus

  • Ordnance handling certification is a plus

  • Specification development and maintenance experience

  • Experience working with suppliers

  • Experience with acceptance test and qualification test support 

  • Experience with technical anomaly resolution and Material Review Board (MRB) disposition

  • Experience with Scheduling, Cost Account Management (CAM) and EVMS (Earned Value Management Systems)

Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
