Job Summary:
Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED) brings together the Company's best-in-class product, technology, and commercialization teams together into one global organization. DMED is responsible for the P&L management and all distribution, network and engineering operations, sales, advertising, data, and certain key technology functions worldwide for the Company's content engines. DMED also manages operations of the Company's streaming services including Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Disney+ HotStar, as well as domestic broadcast and cable television networks.

As part of DMED Technology, the DMED Consumer Experiences & Platforms pillar is responsible for creating the consumer facing applications across ABC, ABC News, the Disney Channel, ESPN, FX, National Geographic, Marvel, and more.

We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer to help us build ground breaking digital experiences. As a Principal engineer you will be a key member of a small team of developers. Every day, you'll work with team members across disciplines architecting and implementing solutions to very complex and challenging problems for the ESPN/ESPN+ application. You'll interact daily with our product managers to understand our domain and create technical solutions that push us forward.

This is a highly collaborative role where partnership and relationship building with many different non-technical lines of business and other technology teams will be critical. The ideal candidate is a smart, results-oriented person with a mix of passion for outstanding application architecture and coding, who also has the soft skills of building relationships and consensus.
Responsibilities:
  • Build well-designed, well-engineered, stable, scalable cloud based applications using Kotlin and Groovy in AWS.
  • Conceive of and set the architectural direction for major software development projects.
  • Develop creative solutions to critical issues and complex design problems.
  • Manage and participate in the software development lifecycle, including the build, deployment, packaging, and dependency management stages.
  • Perform unit and system level testing on their application and all affected systems.
  • Work both independently and collaborate with a team of engineers with peer reviews to learn from and teach one another.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to deliver features on time and to specifications.
  • Provide detailed estimates of work and ensure timely delivery of features.
  • Continuously learn and keep up to date with emerging technologies to evaluate impact to business and member value.
  • Deliver an outstanding experience for our Fans.
Basic Qualifications:
    • 10+ years of full software development lifecycle experience
    • Exceptional understanding of best practices for object-oriented and modularized software with a particular emphasis on Kotlin, Groovy, Java, or equivalent language.
    • Passionate about writing clean, well-organized, and production-ready code for highly scalable, high-volume web applications.
    • Self-motivated with exceptional problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication skills and experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams of product managers, designers, and engineers.
    • Deep knowledge of how to protect web applications from security vulnerabilities.
    • Be organized and able to remain productive even when you have multiple deliverables.
    • BS or BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience
Preferred Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of front end or mobile app development strongly preferred.
    • Experience developing cloud-based applications in AWS strongly preferred.
